Just minutes before ODE sent the release to the public, superintendents received notice of new additions to the Ready Schools, Safe Learners (RSSL) document this morning. The biggest change is that Oregon will shift to allowing 3 feet of physical distancing under certain conditions in schools, in alignment with recent studies and new guidance from the CDC.
Here are some of the key updates:
- Elementary schools must maintain at least 3 feet of physical distance between students to the maximum extent possible.
- Middle and High School must maintain at least 3 feet of physical distance between students to the maximum extent possible, when the county case rate is <200 (green level on the metrics chart in Section 0).
- Middle and High School must maintain at least 6 feet of physical distance between students to the maximum extent possible, when the county case rate is ≥200 (yellow and red levels on the metrics chart in Section 0).
- All schools must maintain 6 feet between staff at all times and 6 feet between staff and students to the maximum extent possible.
- Removal of the 35 sq ft per person requirement and other physical distancing changes are documented in the RSSL guidance.
We will be reviewing the new guidance and, at this time, we will NOT MAKE ANY IMMEDIATE CHANGES. We will continue with our current hybrid planning until we have a chance to review the new 88 page RSSL and meet with the unions. Please note that the new guidance does not include any timeframe for implementation, recognizing the timing of the announcement during Spring Break and the challenges necessary to adapt to this significant change.

El mayor cambio es que Oregon cambiará para permitir 3 pies de distancia física bajo ciertas condiciones en las escuelas, en consonancia con estudios recientes y la nueva guía de los CDC.
Estas son algunas de las principales actualizaciones:
- Las escuelas primarias deben mantener al menos 3 pies de distancia física entre los estudiantes en la mayor medida posible.
- La escuela secundaria y preparatoria deben mantener al menos 3 pies de distancia física entre los estudiantes en la mayor medida posible, cuando la tasa de casos del condado es <200 (nivel verde en la tabla de métricas en la Sección 0).
