Fall is here with another opportunity to share reminders about keeping our schools safe and our students and staff healthy this school year. There are a few simple precautions that we can all put in place which will be an incredible help to keeping our schools open and safe and students in their classes. These precautions include:

We have had several cases of symptomatic students coming to school and, consequently, many close contacts who have had to quarantine who would not have been exposed had the symptomatic student stayed home and received a Covid-19 test. Please keep your child home and get a Covid-19 PCR test when he/she is exhibiting Covid-19 symptoms which can be found on slide 8 HERE.

The Covid-19 vaccination not only reduces risk of infection and severe illness, but also reduces or eliminates the need to miss class or athletics if exposed to a positive case. If your eligible child has not yet been vaccinated, you may schedule a vaccination appointment at www.vaccinateri.org. Students should provide proof of vaccination status to the school nurse teacher assigned to their respective building. Failure to provide proof of vaccination will result in the individual being considered unvaccinated for the purposes of contact tracing or other public health requirements.

Per the Governor’s order, masks are required in schools. The CDC also encourages wearing a mask in other settings where Covid-19 could be spread. Please see their information linked HERE.

The best possible way to reduce infection and quarantines is to have as many people as possible participate in Covid-19 PCR screening tests. These are conducted in our nurses’ offices and we receive the results usually within a day. All staff are required to have weekly Covid-19 screening tests. If more students participate, we will have fewer infections spread through our community either through asymptomatic spread or through inattention to symptoms.

Our district is hosting a FREE flu vaccine clinic for all to attend.

When: Wednesday, October 27th, 2021

Time: 4:00-7:00pm

Where: Narragansett Pier Middle School Cafeteria | 235 South Pier Road, Narragansett, RI

Participants: Community Clinics – ages 3 and older

The flu is a serious, highly contagious, and sometimes deadly disease. Catching the flu means missing days of work and school. Don’t take the risk — the flu vaccine is your best protection against the flu.

As you settle into October, NPP has 2 important announcements to share with you for the safety of your kids.

This year we have added to the French program at the Pier School. There will be French 1A in 7th grade and Spanish 1A in 7th grade. Both of these continue in French 1B and Spanish 1B in 8th grade.

A new course has been added at Narragansett High School which covers the remaining three units of Code.org’s CS Discoveries program. All students at the Narragansett Pier School complete Unit 1: Problem Solving, Unit 2: Web Development and Unit 3: Animations and Games. Now, students have the opportunity to complete this course at the High School, exploring Unit 4: The Design Process, Unit 5: Data and Society and Unit 6: Physical Computing. We believe that this course will help students who are interested in enrolling in the CISCO or URI Computer Science tracks be better prepared for success.

Dear Parents/Guardians of 7th and 8th Grade Students,

I hope that everyone is settling into a good routine. The beginning of every school year is an exciting time for students to set goals for themselves for the year. Whether it’s focusing on improving a particular academic skill or trying something new, I encourage all students to reflect on their previous school year and think about what they would like to accomplish this year.

In light of setting new goals, I emailed all 7th & 8th grade students to remind them that they have the opportunity to apply to the Narragansett Pier School’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). I am also in the process of visiting each of the 7th and 8th grade SOAR groups so that I can deliver this information to students in person as well. Applicants must demonstrate strong qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship and service. As a result, applicants must have a cumulative average of 90 for the first three quarters of the school year to qualify and must also complete a minimum of 12 hours of community service to meet the requirements for scholarship and service. Of equal importance, the NJHS Selection Committee will also review the attendance and discipline records for each applicant to ensure that students are held to a high standard for character, leadership and citizenship.

Although completed applications are not due until March 31st, 2022, I thought that it would be timely to share this information with you as parents/guardians so that you can discuss this opportunity with your child/children. I instructed students to email or see me if they are interested in applying to NJHS this year and if so, I will provide them with the code to join the NJHS Google Classroom Page which stores the NJHS application (including all forms needed) and is where students submit their applications online. Please feel free to view the NJHS Informational Flyer that was shared with all students as well.

The Athlete of the Month campaign highlights NHS students who exemplifies sportsmanship, dedication, and standout participation in any sports offered at the school.

Recipients receive a certificate as well as their picture featured on the wall in athletics for the entire month.

Senior Olivia Waranis and her team are dominating their division with an 8-0 start in the month of September. Livy, a team captain, leads the offensive stats, combining for 45 kills, 11 Aces and 9 Blocks.

Junior Aidan Hayes and the defending 2020 State Champions are off to a 4-1 start overall. Aidan is leading the Mariners offensively with 6 goals and 3 assists.
