Do Iowa schools have mask mandates? See which schools require masks and which are still deciding

Des Moines Register staff

Wednesday was the first day several Iowa school districts restarted universal mask mandates after a U.S. District judge put on a hold a law that forbid them from doing so.

Leading the way: Des Moines Public Schools. Its superintendent, Tom Ahart, was the first to announce a new mask policy within hours of the injunction being put into place.

Other school districts, especially those in suburban Des Moines and rural areas, have been slower to respond. Several districts are expected to decide whether to put masking orders in place by the end of the week.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued on behalf of families with students of disabilities and won the injunction, said in a statement earlier this week it believed school districts were required to put a mask order in place to comply with federal laws and guidance. As part of its defense, the state argued an injunction would not necessitate schools reinstituting masking policies.
