Holiday Message from the Superintendent

 

Dear Faculty, Staff, Students,  Parents, and Supporters,

 

As we head into the Winter Recess over the next week, on behalf of the Jersey City Board of Education and myself, we wish our families Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! 

 

It is time to pause and reflect on the blessings over the past year. We are thankful for a school community that supports students and our return to complete in-person learning. The Jersey City Public School District has outstanding employees, students, and parents. 

 

Reflecting on the past year, I am very proud of our accomplishments. The future will bring surprises, but we will conquer the challenges and educate our students. 

 

We must pass along advice and guidance as we continue to face health challenges. Masks are an option for students and staff concerned with airborne illnesses such as COVID-19 and the Flu. Consider getting vaccinated and using the in-home Covid-19 testing kits.

 

Have a wonderful and blessed holiday filled with peace, love, and happiness with your loved ones! We will see you next year.

Dear Parents,

 

The winter vacation begins this week. Schools dismiss early at 12:45 on Thursday, December 22nd before closing for the Winter Recess.  Classes resume Tuesday, January 3, 2023, with a regular schedule.  

 

Masks are an option for any student or staff member concerned with airborne illnesses such as COVID-19 and the Flu.  Vaccines are also a vital tool for defending against severe diseases. Children younger than six must have the flu vaccine to attend school. This week the schools will send home in-home Covid-19 testing kits for our students and staff. The district is not mandating testing. Nonetheless, the free kits are available for all families to monitor their health. Any ill person, student, or staff member should remain at home and seek medical advice.

 

The Biden Infrastructure Bill is an excellent opportunity for all New Jersey residents to access high-speed broadband. To achieve equitable and thorough representation and service, the State needs as many residents of our community to complete the Survey. The Survey provides a speed test on bandwidth.  Additionally, it asks a question about community access. Individuals that do not have access need to participate so that the State can identify unserved communities and plan accordingly. You can find the survey at jcboe.org, the district website.

Dear Parents,

 

The flu vaccine reduces the risk of illness. Take time to get a flu vaccine.  Also, take everyday preventive actions that help slow the spread of germs.  If your children get sick, see the doctor. Early treatment is essential. Please remember that the State of New Jersey requires children six months through 59 months of age attending school to receive the influenza vaccine before December 31st of each year.  

 

Families are invited to the Jersey City Arts Vocal Music Program’s Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 20th. This festive concert will take place at 7:00 pm at PS #5,182 Merseles Street featuring students from high schools across the district. This information will also be shared on the district’s website.

 

School attendance is vital for all students from preschool through high school. Students who attend school regularly have higher grades and experience success through adulthood. 

Please make sure doors close firmly behind you when you exit the building.

Dear Parents,

 

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving, and I want to wish our families and staff blessings, good health, and good times. As I reflect on my blessings, I want to let the staff, students, and parents know that I am very grateful for the joy I feel when I spend time with you.  

 

This is a short week and Wednesday, November 23, 2022, is half a day of classes with a 12:30 dismissal, and there are no CASPER or afterschool programs.  The schools and offices are closed Thursday and Friday.  Classes resume Monday, November 28, 2022.

On Saturday, December 3, we will have a Parent Workshop for parents to learn more about the different resources students use from kindergarten to eighth grade.  Please consider registering.  

Please remember that vaccination for the Flu and Covid help lessen the symptoms.  I am grateful for you and how we have approached the challenges with passion and compassion.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Classes resume tomorrow, Monday, November 14, 2022, for an entire week of school.  Thursday is the end of the first marking period.  Elementary, middle, and high school students will complete their quarterly assessments. 

 

The District has partnered with the  JC Public Library to provide students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to obtain or renew a library card.  Students can use this LINK  for the library card application. 

 

Students in kindergarten and first grade can use the online intervention Lalilo to review and improve their phonics skills. Students from second grade through twelfth can use the online intervention Freckle to increase their language arts skills. Both programs are accessible using a tablet or computer.  Contact your child's teacher; if you need more information about these programs.  

 

School attendance is vital for all students from preschool through high school. Students who attend school regularly have higher grades and experience success through adulthood.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Please remember that this week schools are closed. When you vote on Tuesday, consider taking your children with you to vote.  This way, they experience our civic responsibility to vote.  On November 11, our nation pays tribute to all the veterans who have served in the Armed Forces. The district is closed. 

 

If you want your children to review the new skills they are learning, they can use the online programs for additional practice in reading or mathematics. On Saturday, December 3, we will have a Parent Workshop for parents to learn more about the different resources students use from kindergarten to eighth grade. 

 

Preschool parents should have received a letter through the COR portal if their child needs to be vaccinated for the flu. The flu vaccine is mandatory for children five and younger.  This is a good week to have your child vaccinated.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and students will attend school all day.  If you have a young student bringing a costume, please ensure not to send any weapons or accessories that can cause injury.  

School attendance is vital for all students from preschool through high school. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to have higher grades and be more successful into adulthood.  

The Special Education Parent Advisory Group is hosting a free virtual workshop about looking to the future, transitioning from school, and increasing outcomes for adult life after high school. 

We have a whole week of classes this week, and the following week, schools are closed; please keep the information in mind as you create your family’s schedule.

This week students from fourth to twelfth grade will participate in a mock election as a way to encourage young people to become interested in voting and involved in state and national issues and candidates.

 

Currently, preschool nurses are updating medical records, and parents will receive a letter through the COR portal.  The flu vaccine is mandatory for children five and younger.  Please follow the guidelines to ensure your child’s health and does not need to be excluded.

 

Students should start their work on a project for the science fair at their school.  The school competitions will take place from late November to December. In January, the top students will be invited to participate in the district science fair at the Liberty Science Center.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
 
Tomorrow, Monday, October 10, 2022, the Jersey City Public Schools will be closed in observance of Columbus Day, a Federal Holiday. 
 
Wednesday, October 12, 2022, schools will administer the PSAT and SAT tests which are used for entrance into more prestigious admission high schools and colleges. The test measures your child's logical reasoning, reading comprehension, and basic math skills.  All the high schools will dismiss students early, and the staff remains until the end of the day.  Students from preschool to eighth grade have a full day of classes. 
 
This week, teachers will share your child’s progress report.  This is the best time to ask teachers how you can work with them to support your child’s learning and mastery of the learning standards in that grade.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

This week, our Jewish families and colleagues will celebrate Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year.  May you have an easy fast and a good sweet year. 

 

Students do not attend classes this Wednesday, October 5, 2022.  As highlighted in the calendar, the district dedicated the day to professional development for teachers and administrators.

 

The week of October 10, teachers will share your child’s progress report.  That is the best time to ask teachers how you can work with the teachers to support your child’s mastery of the learning standards in that grade.

 

Student attendance is critical for academic success at all grade levels. When students are absent for medical reasons, parents should send a doctor’s note for the school nurse to record the information since the district considers the absence excused.

 

In the district, every school routinely practices security drills.  Additionally, due to police activity in a particular area, the police department will direct the school to implement the stay-in-place drill. If there are students outside for recess, they will be directed to quickly enter the school building. These routines are considered very helpful.  We also ask everyone that when you enter or leave the school building, ensure that the door closes firmly behind them.  Closing the doors is one of the best precautions to keep everyone safe.

Good evening Parents and Guardians,

 

This is Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez with the weekly message. I begin by wishing our Jewish families and colleagues are good sweet and happy new year. This Tuesday, September 27^th, parents of high school students are invited to visit their children’s school for an open house. September is the best time to learn about the opportunities and expectations to work collaboratively with the teachers. All students are completing the start strong assessment through the end of this week. Schools have shared their schedules with parents and guardians the non-tested high school students at Dickinson Ferris Lincoln and Snyder will report at 10:00 AM. The delayed opening will allow all the 9th and 10th graders to complete the science and math assessments. Student attendance is critical for academic success at all grade levels from preschool when they are learning good habits to high school when the students must be present in class to receive credit. When students are absent for medical reasons parents should send a doctor’s note for the school nurse to record the information. Please review this school calendar on the district website to help you plan for your child care on the days that schools are closed.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

On Wednesday, Commissioner of Education Dr. McMillan-Allen identified the JCPS District as high achieving and returned the operations and governance to local control by the Board of Education in collaboration with the administration.

 

This week school will begin welcoming parents for the open house. Elementary Parents, you are invited to visit your child’s classroom on Tuesday, September 20, between 6:30 and 8:00, and Middle School parents on Wednesday, September 21, between 6:30 and 8:00.  The High Schools will host an open house next week. 

 

 The Start Strong Assessment in ELA, math, and science will be administered over two weeks, starting September 19th and ending September 30, 2022.  These brief assessments will identify the students' level of support to master the NJ Student Learning Standards.

 

Students in grades 4 through 10 will take the ELA assessments, and students in grades fourth through eighth will complete the math assessment. Students taking Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry will also take the test. Students in grades 6, 9, and 12 will complete the science assessment. 

 

By now, the schools have shared their schedules with parents/guardians. On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, the non-tested high school students at Dickinson, Ferris, Lincoln, and Snyder will report at 10:00 am. The delayed opening will allow all 9th and 10th graders to complete the ELA assessment.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Today, we honor the brave men and women that lost their lives due to the attacks we witnessed against our country in 2001. I sincerely hope you join me in remembering those we lost and the many courageous helpers that stepped forward that fateful day. 

 

We had a fantastic start to the 2022-2023 school year.  Students, educators, and parents were all smiling as I visited schools.  So, I want to thank the school administrators who got their schools ready and the teachers and support staff who came prepared to fix their classrooms, create lessons, and welcome students. 

 

Elementary Parents, you are invited to visit your child’s classroom on September 20, Middle School parents on September 21, and High School parents on September 27.

Dear Jersey City Public Schools Families,

 

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!   We have been preparing the buildings, hiring teachers, and the District staff is eagerly waiting to greet your children when they return to in-person on September 8, 2022, for a full day of learning!  The mission of the JCPS is to provide equitable access and opportunity for our students to ensure their academic, social/emotional, and career success as we prepare them for a future in our global society.

 

Students should be finishing their summer reading.

 

The Jersey City Public Schools takes the health and well-being of our students and staff seriously.  As per the latest guidance from the NJ Department of Education, our district will transition from a case-investigation response model to a routine disease control model. This model focuses more on responding to clusters of cases, outbreaks, and evidence of ongoing transmission and less on contact tracing. We will notify families and staff in cases of an outbreak.  As per the newest guidance, the district will not mandate weekly testing for unvaccinated staff, temperature screening, or quarantines.

 

During the last year, all the students received free meals due to revised government regulations.  This school year, some students will not be eligible and will need to pay.  Please visit the JCPS website for more information and to complete an application. 

 

This coming week we will share a short video with additional information on the protocols to mitigate the impact of the Covid virus.

Dear parents and guardians,

 

Last Monday, the principals and supervisors returned from summer vacation. We spent the week attending professional development sessions focused on understanding the district’s goals and the curriculum to meet the NJ Student Learning Standards across all content areas. 

 

Freshman students have been attending orientation sessions are their new schools. High School orientation will continue through next week.  

 

Preschool parents who have questions about school assignments, please contact the Early Childhood Department. Parents of students with disabilities who have a question can call the Special Education Department. If you have a school-specific question, please contact the school office. 

 

Students should be finishing their summer reading assignments. Elementary students are using MyOn digital books and activities. High School students can find the information on the district website, and the projects are due no later than September 15, 2022.

 

Classes begin Thursday, September 8, 2022. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Tomorrow Monday, August 22, 2022, all the principals and administrators return from their summer vacation.  In the meantime, the custodians have been working diligently to clean and prepare the schools after a very successful summer program.  The following two weeks will be filled with training and preparation to welcome your children in September.  Each principal will begin sharing information with you very soon.

 

Last Monday, the CDC published new school guidelines and confirmed what most of us were thinking “Covid-19 is here to stay.” The new guidance puts more of a burden on high-risk individuals to protect themselves from the virus and de-emphasizes some of the prevention strategies the district has been using. We are waiting for the NJ Department of Health and the NJ Department of Education to publish the recommendations for the school year.  However, vaccination continues to be the best way to avoid severe symptoms. Please consider vaccination as a way to protect your family.

 

At the Board meeting on August 25, I will submit our recommendation for a contract with Rutgers Health to provide mental health support in the schools. Once approved, we will share the specifics of the various services and tiered interventions.  We also partnered with JC Medical Center- RWJ Barnabas Health to establish health clinics at Dickerson High School, Lincoln High School, and Ferris High School.  Snyder High School already has the highly successful Tigers’ Den.

 

Teachers return to school on September 6, and the first day of classes for students will be Thursday, September 8, for the entire day.

Dear Jersey City Public School Family Members,

 

After months of enthusiastic anticipation, on July 1, 2022, I began my first official day as superintendent of the Jersey City Public School District.   As the cliche goes, “ I hit the road running” after working as the acting superintendent of schools since January.  I truly feel honored to serve as your superintendent of schools.

 

The 2022-2023 school year begins my forty-first year in education.  Although I have truly enjoyed every position within the school district, I am eager to work collaboratively with the community and school personnel to prepare students for a future filled with opportunities and choices.  I can summarize my educational philosophy in a straightforward statement; schools exist to provide students with the programs, support, and opportunities to reach their full potential.  Whether a student’s future includes college, trade school, the military, or the workforce, Jersey City Public Schools students must leave our schools academically, socially, and ethically prepared to be lifelong learners.  All these components are essential since students will continue learning long after they leave and embark on careers that do not exist today.  

 

I am eager to work with the staff, administrators, students, parents, and the community to continue our pursuit of excellence and develop a strategic plan that guides our decisions and practices.  I began my career as a kindergarten teacher and taught almost every elementary grade level.  I was an assistant principal and principal in two different schools, a special assistant, a director of schools, a chief of staff, and a deputy superintendent of schools. I am married to my high school sweetheart and have two adult sons.  I came to this country as a child and succeeded thanks to my family and educators, that prepared me for a beautiful career.  These experiences help me understand the importance of a strong focus on academics and equitable practices to meet the needs of all our students.  

 

I look forward to meeting and working with parents and community leaders to focus on students and finding ways to allow children to be safe, grow, and develop into an adulthood filled with promise and potential.

Good evening Parents,

 

I want to begin by thanking you for your cooperation as we navigated the new normal after the pandemic and every staff member in the district for their commitment to your children. All the elementary summer programs such as SPARKS, HATS, AIM, and others begin Tuesday, July 5, 2022. The high school students attending credit recovery at McNair high school must report in person starting Tuesday, July 5, 2022, with a Chromebook. 

 

The 2022 Summer Reading Resource myON is an electronic resource for Kindergarten to 7th-grade students. Students can continue reading using myON accounts via Clever, where they can access more than 6,000 digital books. Students can view their reading progress on the student dashboard and complete the summer reading activities. Eighth graders have specific summer novels in preparation for high school.

 

This summer, I think we all need to take time for self-care and to reconnect with loved ones. So, the weekly messages will resume on August 21, 2022. The calls will go out as necessary if we need to share information.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

 

 

Monday and Tuesday are the last days of classes for the 2021-2022 school year, with a 12:45 dismissal. I want to take the opportunity to thank you and recognize the contributions you made as we returned to in-person learning. While there were many challenges, our schools maintained continuous learning opportunities for our students with your support.

 

All the preschool children are taking home their Summer Learning Kit with books, a journal, and writing and coloring materials. Please make sure to use the resources to help them be ready for next year.  

 

The high school summer program begins Wednesday, June 29, and the elementary programs begin on Tuesday, July 5.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

 

 

First and foremost, I hope all the fathers and the many who "father" had a wonderful day. Sometimes fathers receive a little less recognition from society, but please remember that you are critical in the lives of children and should be recognized consistently.  So today, I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge the many ways you support your children and those you mentor.

 

This week is the last full week of classes, and students will have a 12:45 dismissal on Friday, June 24. We continue to live through new challenges, but I want to thank the JCPS staff for their continued resolve and dedication during very uncertain experiences.

 

The culmination of the school year is an exciting time when we enjoy the many school activities and graduations. After the last two years of the pandemic, we learned how essential celebrations and rituals are for our well-being. Let's try to stay safe while we celebrate your children's success and milestones. 

 

When leaving the school, please make sure the door closes behind you, and if you notice something suspicious, do not hesitate to contact the authorities or the school.

Dear Parents,

 

Schools will be closed this Friday in observance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of ending slavery in the United States.  

 

On Wednesday, June 15, we will be holding the Title I meeting in person at Central Office, 346 Claremont Ave starting at 6:00 pm. 

 

We are developing a new Strategic Plan and setting goals and priorities for the next three years. We would appreciate your feedback. On Monday, June 20, we will hold a virtual meeting for parents, staff, and community members. Please visit the district website to register for the focus groups.

 

June is an exciting time when we enjoy the school activities and graduations. Please enjoy all the activities and support the students and staff who have worked hard during a challenging year.

The NJ Department of Education extended the testing window for the mandated assessment to accommodate students who needed to quarantine after becoming ill with Covid so that some students will complete their tests this week. 

 

On Thursday, June 9, most third-grade students begin their end-of-course or final exams. Testing will extend through the beginning of the following week. Please consult your children's teachers for the specific schedule. 

 

We ask you to share your thoughts on areas the district should prioritize over the next five years. Your responses will inform the district's goals and the development of the next strategic plan.

 

The survey will ask for your feedback on possible priority areas and what the Jersey City Public Schools should start, stop, or continue prioritizing. Students, parents, community members, and district employees are encouraged to participate. All responses will be kept anonymous and confidential.

Dear Parents and Staff,

 

Tomorrow Monday, May 30, 2022, schools will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.  We honor and remember the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace, freedom, and security.

 

Our hearts and prayers go to the hundreds of families impacted by the atrocity in Uvalde, Texas.  This past week I sent a list of resources for families and employees to support individuals having a difficult time coping with the event's aftermath.  Additionally, the school will reinforce activities to help students' social and emotional development in dealing with adversity. 

 

The Bilingual Parent Advisory Council will meet on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the Franklin L. Williams Middle School 7 from 6:00-7:30 pm.  The goal is to establish an effective partnership between families and schools and promote students' academic success.

 

This week we will be sending out the acceptance letter for students to attend the accelerated AEP program at Middle School 4 and Academy I.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

I hope you were able to enjoy this beautiful weekend. This Thursday, May 26, the District will be hosting the Parents as Partners Conference from 9-2:00 pm. There is free transportation from your school to the event at N.J.C.U. We have scheduled very informative workshops; there will be raffled prizes and lunch. Please join numerous district administrators and me to collaborate the exchange ideas. 

 

I hope you have visited the website to review the summer opportunities for our elementary students. The registration link is open. We have hands-on activities that help students extend their literacy skills, math, and social studies while engaging in S.T.E.M. activities, dance, music, theater, and physical education. C.A.S.P.E.R. is also available. The High School Credit Recovery Program allows students to catch up and meet the credit and course requirements for older students. Parents can call the school counselor to see if their child can benefit since there are times when students may not be as communicative.

 

All the students with good attendance will finish taking the mandated N.J.S.L.A. test this week. The school year is coming to a close, and we must remain focused on doing what is best.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

As the N.J.S.L.A. continues in our elementary schools, the high school testing starts this week. All high schools, except Infinity, will have a delayed opening with non-tested students reporting to their high school at 10:30 am.

 

Thursday, May 26, the District will be hosting the Parents as Partners Conference from 9:00 am-2:00 pm. There is free transportation from your school to the event at N.J.C.U. We have scheduled very informative workshops; there will be raffled prizes and lunch. Please contact the Community Aide at your school to register.

 

I hope you have visited the J.C.B.O.E. website and school websites to review the summer opportunities for our elementary students. The registration link is open—students who attend our S.P.A.R.K.S. Camp are eligible to remain for the afternoon in the C.A.S.P.E.R. Program.  Some of the summer opportunities outside the District have a limited number of students who can attend. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have a problem registering, do not hesitate to contact your child’s school counselor for support.

 

The Pandemic continues to impact our lives and health. New Jersey’s COVID-19 indicators are trending in the wrong direction, and we have seen an increase in the number of individuals testing positive within our schools. 

 

Please remind your children to follow the healthy habits I shared this week. Students and staff who are immunocompromised or live with persons at high risk for Covid-19 illness should consider masking. 

 

Let us remain vigilant to reduce the transmission of the virus.

I hope all the mothers and the individuals who mother others had a wonderful day.   Your caring and loving ways make a difference in your children's lives and those you mother. 

 

The District Open House for report card distribution is scheduled for May 10th in the Elementary Schools, May 11th in the High Schools, and May 12th in the Middle Schools. There has been a surge in individuals testing positive for the Covid 19 virus. Therefore to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, the third marking period, Open Houses will be held virtually between 6:30 and 8:00 P.M. for all schools. 

 

Your child's teacher will send you the information to join a virtual meeting. If you do not receive the information, contact the principal or vice-principal. 

 

The first week of testing was very successful, and the students will continue to take the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment through the end of the month.

Good evening Parents and Guardians,

 

Schools will be closed tomorrow, Monday, May 2, 2022, in observance of Eid, and classes will resume Tuesday, May 3, 2022, for a full day of instruction.   On behalf of the Jersey City Public Schools, we wish you and your family a safe and joyful holiday.  

 

Today is School Principals’ Day to recognize the importance of principals, from elementary to high school, and all the work they do for the betterment of the school.  May 3 is teacher appreciation day, and May 6 is nurse appreciation day.  We are very happy for the many dedicated and hard-working teachers, nurses, and principals within our schools and want them to know how grateful we are for them.

 

The district will begin giving students their New Jersey Student Learning Assessment this Wednesday, May 4,  and continue through the end of the month. We have scheduled tests by grade level and content. All students will take English Language Arts and mathematics. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11th grades will also take a science test. The assessment will inform parents and educators of the student's progress in meeting the grade-level standards and not impacting their promotion.   High School students must pass the mandatory examination or demonstrate their ability using the portfolio process to obtain a graduation diploma.

I genuinely hope that you and your children had an opportunity to rest and gather new strength during the Spring Recess. This week we have a whole week of classes. Teachers will continue preparing students in grades third through high school for the mandatory New Jersey Student Learning Assessment starting May 4th and continuing through May. Students will be tested in English Language Arts and mathematics. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11th grades will also take a science test. This week we will post the schedule on the district website. 

 

Using the portfolio process, high school teachers continue working with some of our seniors who still need to satisfy the graduation requirement in ELA, math, or both.

Dear Parents and Staff,

 

Tomorrow our students begin a short week; Thursday, April 14, schools will dismiss all students at 12:45, and schools will be closed from Friday, April 15, until Friday, April 22. The Jersey City Public Schools will re-open on Monday, April 25, 2022. Our Christian families will celebrate Easter and our Jewish families' Passover. If you observe either holiday (or both), may it be filled with hope – and may your celebrations with family and friends be filled with joy.

 

Covid-19 testing will occur at the regular locations for students and staff at their standard times Monday through Thursday from April 11 through 14.

 

Unvaccinated staff who usually test on Friday will need to go to an alternate testing location on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

 

Testing for the following week when schools are closed will be held on Tuesday, April 19, Wednesday, April 20, and Thursday, April 21 at the Central Office from 7:30 AM to 3 PM.

 

All 12-month unvaccinated employees need to report for testing on these dates. Unvaccinated employees without a negative test are out of compliance with Executive Order 253 and will be unable to remain at work without a negative test result. Every staff member will receive an email with the information for more details.

 

As the Covid-19 virus continues to plague our area, everyone must maintain a social distance of 6 feet whenever possible to prevent getting sick. Individuals also have the choice of wearing a mask.

APRIL 3, 2022

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Yesterday, April 2, 2022, students who are Jersey City residents seeking admission to the middle school accelerated program at Infinity Institute and AEP  took the OLSAT test.   We will also administer the Test next Saturday, April 9, 2022.   Students must demonstrate a high academic ability for consideration into the accelerated programs.

 

All eighth-grade students will take a  World Language placement test between April 4-April 14, 2022. The assessment will allow us to appropriately schedule students for a  World Language course that meets their linguistic skills. Since we teach Spanish from kindergarten to eighth grade, all students will take the placement test in Spanish. The Test is also available in Mandarin and French. The high schools will only use the language placement test to schedule the World Language Course, which will not affect their grade.

Dear JCPS Parents and Guardians,

 

Our very own St. Peter's University basketball team is playing later today in the Elite-8 in the men's National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. We are incredibly proud of our hometown team. In their honor, Monday, March 28, we will celebrate this historical underdog's success in the NCAA by making it a "peacock blue day" in the Jersey City Public Schools. All students and staff are encouraged to wear blue. We will be rooting for them as we congratulate their accomplishments, including our former student, Isiah Dasher, a Ferris High School alumni and "all-county" player.

 

I also want to congratulate all the school winners that participated in the District Spelling Bee and Diego, the first place winner for grades 3 to 5, and Jomana, the middle school first-place winner.

 

After the spring recess in April, all students from third grade to high school will take the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments in English Language Arts, mathematics, and science at select grade levels. I included a link to the NJDOE's Parent Resources in the email. Please continue to work with your child's teacher to ensure they are having success with the grade-level standards.

 

If you have a neighbor with young children, please remind them that preschool registration for 3 and 4 years ends on March 31.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Today is the second anniversary of that fateful day we had to close the schools due to the pandemic. We have learned much and endured many losses and pain. As our school system continues to move forward, the goal is to each day do better for our students and families as we establish a new normal filled with possibilities. 

 

Our 11th-grade students will be taking the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment from Monday to Friday this week. All students in grade 11 will take assessments in both ELA and math as a requirement for graduation. Dickinson High School and Snyder High School will have delayed openings for the ninth, tenth and twelfth-grade students. All the other high schools, including Renaissance Institute, will start classes at the regularly scheduled time.

 

This week Dr. Ronald E McNair Academic High School and Infinity High School will send out the acceptance letters inviting students to join the freshman and sophomore classes this September; congratulations to our highest achieving students! The parents and guardians will receive an email and a hard copy of the letter.

 

All students will receive their interim progress report for the third marking period. The information allows parents to monitor their child's grades and progress in mastering the grade-level standards.

Dear Parents,

 

This week we have a whole week of classes, and we continue with a strong focus on academics to eliminate the learning loss that some students experience during remote instruction. Effective tomorrow, Monday, March 7, parents, visitors, and employees will not need to wear masks or facial covers. In other words, face masks will be optional and a matter of personal choice. Parents know their children and their family best and decide if they want their children to wear masks. Students will not be required to wear a mask on the school bus, but again, parents can decide that they would like their child to wear a mask when being transported to and from school. Please be assured that we are not abandoning our ongoing safety protocols and procedures designed to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus. We will continue to

perform daily temperature checks

make weekly testing available to students at all of our schools

require a quarantine period for students and staff identified as necessary

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We begin online preschool registration this Tuesday from March 1st to the 31st.  Please visit the district website and click anywhere on the Early Childhood Banner to take you to the registration page.  Everyone can change the language of the website to their preference.  

On Wednesday, March 2nd is "Read Across America," and younger learners will celebrate with additional storytime and guest readers.  It is a fun day in elementary schools. 

I will send the information by Wednesday about the mask mandate in the Jersey City Public Schools since the New Jersey Department of Education, and the Department of Health held a meeting on Friday to provide guidance, and the CDC released new information. 

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is constantly playing in the news with images of destruction and human suffering.  Please comfort your children as they see the devastating photos.   We will be conducting a fundraiser and age-appropriate learning activities to assist in the humanitarian effort.  When children are allowed to assist others, it gives them a feeling of agency and comfort.

Good evening Parents and Staff,

 

Tomorrow Monday, February 21, the schools are closed in observance of President's Day. There will not be any COVID testing for students or staff this Monday. The rest of the week will continue their regular schedule. Students who test on a Monday will resume their testing on Monday, February 28, 2022. Unvaccinated staff that usually test on Monday at their school must report to another location in their quadrant for testing on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Testing is also available at Central Office on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

 

Parents with eighth-grade students, please make sure to visit the district website and click on the banner for the JCPS High School Showcase. It will take you to videos that talk about the many programs within our high schools. The virtual informational sessions for each high school begin this Tuesday. School principals and teachers will be able to answer your questions. Our high schools also have a "Dual Enrollment Program" that allows students to graduate from high school with an associate's degree. The students who graduate with an associate's degree have 60 credits towards their college degree, and the district pays for the classes and materials. 

 

On Wednesday, February 23, we will have the monthly in-person Title I meeting at Central Office, 346 Claremont Avenue, starting at 6:00 PM. This month's session will discuss mandated programs included in the JCPS's Curriculum.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

This week we have a whole week of classes.  Even the weather seems to be cooperating.  Students just started the third marking period, and it is essential to keep a consistent focus on academics to make sure students master the benchmarks for their specific grade level. 

 

As the number of new Covid 19 cases continues to decline in New Jersey, we will reduce the quarantine period for unvaccinated children identified as close contacts and close contacts with family members or people who live in the same household.  This change would reduce the dreaded 24-day quarantine.  We will post the information on the District Website no later than Wednesday.  The updated regulations will require individuals to have a negative test on day 5 to return to school,  wear a mask as we already do, and only participate in extracurricular activities that can be performed wearing a mask for days 6-10. 

 

Thank you for being so patient as we implement weekly Covid testing for children.  Some of the 45 schools have experienced delays and insufficient medical personnel to administer the test.  The District Nurse and I had a meeting with the Testing Company this past Thursday, and they are working to improve the staffing and supply issues so that we can offer weekly testing for the children with parental consent.  The test is a simple collection of saliva.

Good evening Parents and Guardians,

 

This coming week marks the halfway point for the school year. The third marking period begins on Wednesday, February 2, and the students have an early dismissal. Students will only attend school half a day, and teachers will participate in professional development. Check the message from your particular school for the specific dismissal times. CASPER, after school care program, will not be available on Wednesday.

 

 

The High School Virtual Fair is coming up in February. Jersey City 8th graders and Parents, soon you will be selecting a program at one of our high that meets your interest. Every Jersey City resident can apply to a Small Learning Community program within our high schools. The JCPS District will hold its annual HIP Fair Showcase virtually in late February. Are your children interested in the Arts, Dance, Science, Travel, Business, Media and Broadcasting, Career and Technical Education, Culinary Arts, Fashion, Education, Law, Engineering, and many more? The JCPS has a small learning program that sparks your child's imagination. 

 

Students must submit the completed applications for Mc Nair Academic High School and Infinity High School on or before 4:00 pm Monday, February 7, 2022. School counselors and administrators will provide parents/guardians with detailed information regarding the application process.

 

On the District Website, you will find the link to register your children for weekly COVID-19 testing. On the Jersey City Covid webpage, you will find the locations for vaccination. Testing and vaccination are essential tools to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

Tomorrow Monday, January 17, 2021, is a federal holiday, and we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students do not have classes. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is a good day to reminisce about the words of wisdom from the giant of the civil rights movement whose nonviolent resistance to the injustices, racial segregation, employment discrimination, and the denial of the right to vote — enlightened our Nation and the world. Dr. King reminded us to consistently meet anger with compassion in the face of tumult and upheaval. As we honor Dr. King, let us remember, "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."

 

Schools will be open as of Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Please make sure to visit the district's website at jcboe.org to view a lengthy message explaining the current Covid-19 practice to keep everyone healthy and present. A message from Deputy Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

I hope you and your loved ones have been well as we cope with the surge of the COVIID-19 virus in our area.  This week students will attend virtual classes.  Students must sign in every morning during their first period or homeroom to be marked present.  In high school, students must sign in every period to present.  Teachers are taking attendance, and students must log in.  When students do not log the teacher will consider them absent, and every absence impacts their academic progress and promotion at the end of the school year.  If your child has a problem getting into their virtual classrooms, please call the school and let them know.  Principals, nurses, and the office staff are working in person.  Every school is giving breakfast and lunch to children under 18.  You can visit a school near your home, and it does not need to be the school or early childhood center they attend.

 

This Wednesday, students finish classes at midday as scheduled.  Teachers and administrators attend professional development in the afternoon to stay current with instructional practices and the curriculum. 

 

There are numerous testing sites for COVID-19 throughout The City with free testing if you feel any symptoms or may have been in close contact with an individual who tested positive.  Testing is also available at the Patricia Noonan School #26 and the Dr. Michael Conti School #5.  Visit the JC Health Webpage .

 

We plan with our vendor to make testing available for students at all our schools.  To make the process less complex in such a large district, we divided the schools into Phase I and Phase II.  Testing will be available in Phase I schools the week of January 18.  The Phase I and II schools list will be attached to the email with this message.  Towards the end of this coming week, we will share the specific custom link for parents to register their children for their school.  Testing for students is voluntary and involves the collection of saliva.  The option to register your child will remain open throughout the school year for your convenience.

 

Please remember that it is crucial that your child signs in to their classes.  Parents,  please consider the benefits of getting everyone in your family vaccinated if they are eligible.  As we see with vaccinated individuals who get sick, the symptoms are much milder.  Fewer individuals are ending up in the hospital.

Dear Parents,

 

Happy New Year! We may be apart due to the Pandemic, but our students and staff are always in our hearts. Please take care of yourself and stay healthy in these uncertain times. 

 

As a precautionary measure, we return to virtual instruction on Monday, January 3, 2022. We anticipate returning to in-person learning on Monday, January 10, 2022, and we will continue to update you as circumstances change. This week we are meeting with the State vendor to make available testing to our students in our schools. Testing will allow us to keep close contact in schools.  

 

We will be implementing our District's Virtual Instruction Plan. Our parents' guide on the website will provide specific information about daily instruction, student attendance, and support for parents and students in many different languages. If parents have questions, they need to reach out to the school by phone or email the school principal. The School Web page has the information.

 

Tuesday, we will start serving breakfast and lunch to the children younger than 18 years old attending our schools and the preschool centers. Families can visit a school near their home. It is essential to get vaccinated, visit a clinic near you as soon as possible.

Hello Parents,

 

This is Franklin Walker, Superintendent,

 

Happy holidays, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Feliz Navidad, Festival of Lights, and happy Three Kings’ Day.

 

As we come to the final days of 2021, we can’t help but reflect on the past year of challenges and mixed expectations.  When I look back on the year and see how far the district has come.  I can’t thank each of you enough for the wonderful partnership you provided, on behalf of your wonderful children.

 

The goal was and still remains, “developing a vision of doing what’s best for all students and making them academically competitive in a global society”.

 

As Superintendent, my leadership goals and objectives, have always been to develop consensus on decisions by using facts and building relationships, and not, as a result of, inaccurate information and/or controversy. Parents, I want to thank you, for the confidence you placed in me, the opportunity to be an advocate for your children, and the support you provided during some very challenging times.

 

On January 3, 2022, schools will open and in-person classes will resume.  We will continue daily communication with the Jersey City Health Department to monitor and implement all appropriate recommendations.

 

The New Jersey immunization rules require students to receive a series of mandatory immunizations before attendance at school and others at different ages.  Students missing a required vaccine, like, Diphtheria, Polio, Measles, and Chicken Pox, will not be allowed to return to school in January, without them.

 

I WILL ALWAYS BE AN ADVOCATE FOR THE CHILDREN OF JERSEY CITY.

Today, Wednesday, December 22, is the last day of classes for the year. Without stating the obvious, 2021 has been challenging, marked with historical events and unforeseeable changes at work and home. It has also been a time of great learning for everyone.  Schools will open and in-person classes will resume on Monday, January 3, 2022. We will continue our daily communication with the Jersey City Health Department to monitor and implement all the recommendations for isolation, testing, and quarantine. Additionally, we will continue to follow the CDC's protocols for universal masking, promote vaccination of children and adults, provide weekly testing, trace infections, keep at least 3 feet of distance indoors, and practice good hygiene and sanitation.  Since September, the possibility of remote learning has been part of our readiness plan, and we have the JCPS Remote Learning Plan for School District Closure posted on the district's website if necessary. However, schools provide education by building knowledge, helping students, identifying instances of child neglect, providing nutritious meals. But aside from academic learning, schools also help develop non-cognitive skills -- such as self-control and executive function.  To prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, everyone should get vaccinated, wear a mask, avoid large gatherings. Everyone with symptoms must stay home and seek medical advice. As I read in a recent public health journal, "when it comes to pandemics, there are no winners." Opening schools means we lose less. Sometimes losing less is the best we can do.  Schools will open in January for in-person learning. On behalf of the Senior Leadership, we wish you a joyful and safe holiday and a Happy New Year! Hello Parents and Guardians,

 

This is Franklin Walker Superintendent. Students will be in school on full days for Monday and Tuesday of next week and a half day on Wednesday December 22^nd. The district will be closed from December 23rd until classes resume on January the 3^rd after the holiday and winter break sessions. This school year started off as a major challenge returning everyone back to in person instruction in September and here we are ending December in a few days and we remain in person. I sincerely thank all of you for helping us to meet that challenge. The New Jersey immunization rules require students to receive a series of mandatory immunizations before attendance at school and others at different ages. Unfortunately, students missing a required vaccine will not be allowed to return to school in January. The COVID-19 health risk remains, and everyone must do their part, wear masks, continue to social distance and avoid large crowds when and where appropriate. Getting everyone in the family vaccinated proves to be a good health precaution good evening remain safe and continue to be well.

It is heartbreaking to see the destruction and devastation of the tornadoes that tore through the South and Midwest this weekend. The Jersey City Public Schools wants to express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed in a series of devastating tornadoes that struck the central regions of our Nation. May those the storms have impacted find peace, comfort, and hope.

 

This is the last week of classes in 2021, where students will attend school every day. Together we have navigated difficult times as the Pandemic continues to affect our lives. Still, by focusing on doing what is best for children, they are better today than a year ago. Going to school is very important to kids academically and socially. Going to school is very important for parents that need to work. 

 

Data about the Covid-19 vaccine demonstrates that fully vaccinated individuals are less likely to become ill. If they come down with the virus, they recuperate faster without being hospitalized. I believe in vaccines so strongly that I got fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as soon as I was eligible. Most leaders and staff in this district are fully vaccinated. Would you please speak to your pediatrician or the team at our vaccination schools so that they can truthfully answer your questions? Not getting vaccinated means that our kids could potentially pass on the virus to others if they get infected.

Hello Parents,

 

Students will have a whole week of classes, and the focus continues to be doing what is best for children and making them academically competitive in a global society.  We will achieve our goal by providing enrichment, acceleration, resources, and support. 

 

In the Jersey City Public Schools District, we practice a proactive approach to safety.  All visitors, staff, and students are funneled to as few entrances as safely possible and through metal detectors with very few exceptions.  The security guards escort visitors within the school building, and every guard has two-way radios that communicate to each other and the central office dispatch center. Some radios communicate directly with the Jersey City Police Department.  This summer, we began to wire all our buildings with panic buttons that report directly to the police.  Every school regularly conducts state-mandated emergency drills that consist of evacuations, bomb threats, lockdowns, stay in place, and dangerous intruder threats in addition to fire drills. 

 

The New Jersey school immunization rules require students to receive a series of mandatory immunizations before attendance at school and others at different ages.   The district nurses have sent numerous messages about the need for children to get vaccinated.  Unfortunately, students missing a required vaccine will not be allowed to return to school in January.  

 

The Department of Health warns us that the Covid-19 is a risk, and everyone must do their part. We all must continue to properly wear a mask, maintain social distance, and avoid large gatherings.   Please consider getting the whole family vaccinated.

This evening is the first night of Hanukkah, and I want to wish our Jewish families peace and good health as they celebrate the Festival of Lights.  May the candles be your beacon of light on your path to joy.

 

Tomorrow Monday, the High Schools will distribute report cards.  All the parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually for everyone's safety as the Pandemic continues.  We have a few full weeks of classes before the winter recess.  We must focus on the academic success of our students.  Please continue collaborating with the teachers to make sure students finish their assignments and review all the new skills to achieve mastery.  Students learn as they interact with the content and apply the skill over time.

This week schools will dismiss students early on Wednesday and close Thursday and Friday to celebrate Thanksgiving.  Traditionally, families gather together to celebrate, give thanks for what they are grateful for, and eat a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.  This year as we continue to cope with the Pandemic, it is crucial to count our blessings and hope for continued progress in controlling the Covid-19 virus.  I am indeed grateful for the excellent students in our schools, their families, and all the dedicated employees that continue to work hard to educate our children. On Monday, the PK to 5 and PK to 8th-grade schools will distribute report cards.  On Tuesday, the middle schools will distribute report cards.  All the parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually for everyone's safety. 

 

Over the years, vaccines have prevented countless disease cases and saved millions of lives. The New Jersey school immunization rules require students to receive a series of immunizations before attendance at school and others at different ages. Some vaccines are mandatory, and others are recommended.   The district nurses have sent numerous messages about the need for children to get vaccinated.  Unfortunately, students will not be allowed to return to school in January if they are not up to date with the mandated immunization.  The Covid-19 vaccine is not required at this time, but health professionals continue to recommend the vaccine for children and adults alike.  Would you mind speaking to your child's doctor when you go for the mandated vaccines and ask them about the Covid-19 vaccine?

 

The COVID-19 vaccine will be available at ten schools throughout the City on Monday and Tuesday.  They will be closed for Thanksgiving on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hello Parents,

 

This week our students have classes every day and starting tomorrow, Monday, November 15, 2021, we will begin serving dinner meals to all the students attending CASPER and 21st Century Programs after school. 

 

The Jersey City Public Schools District partnered with the Jersey City Health Department to host vaccination clinics at ten schools throughout the District. The Clinics will operate from Monday to Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30 PM. Every clinic will have the Pfizer pediatric and adult vaccines for individuals five years old and older. The clinics will be able to vaccinate everyone in the family who is five and older.  The JC Health Department encourages parents to register by calling 201-373-2316, but they will have some extra vaccines on hand for walk-ins.   If you have questions about the vaccines, we encourage that you visit the clinic, and they will be happy to answer your questions. 

 

The week of November 22, 2021, we will begin distributing report cards by grade levels for the first marking period. Parents will have an opportunity to discuss their child's progress with their teachers. Thanks to everyone doing their best to follow the covid safety practices, we have remained open with in-person instruction.  Therefore, all the parent-teacher conferences will be virtual.  The schools will send parents all the information to attend the virtual meetings.

Dear Parents,

 

This week we celebrate Veterans Day on Thursday, November 11, 2021. Schools are closed as our nation celebrates and honors America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

 

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for 5- to 11-year-old children. We are working with the JC Health Department to host vaccination clinics for students at many schools. Parents will need to register and give permission for their children to be vaccinated. Parents will have the opportunity to be present if they choose to have their children vaccinated. The current regulations do not mandate vaccination, but the health experts recommend them for everyone's safety.

 

Starting this Monday, November 8, 2021, the Jersey City Public Schools District will have testing available at the schools throughout the District and at Central Office for any unvaccinated employee. The times will allow workers to test before starting their workday, during lunch, or during preparation periods. All unvaccinated employees must have a weekly negative COVID-19 antigen or molecular test administered by a laboratory as per Board Policy 2260.3. We emailed the information and schedule to all the employees. 

 

The school calendar is divided into four parts, and the first marking period ends on November 15. Thankfully, we have been able to focus on accelerating learning as we transitioned to a new school normal with safety precautions to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Students are thriving thanks to the dedicated professionals in the many departments within the District. I genuinely hope your children had an opportunity to enjoy dressing up as a favorite character and play-act their fantasies if you celebrate Halloween.  Creative play is a development stage of childhood. 

 

Many of our families will celebrate Diwali this coming week, the victory of light or good over darkness.  To all our families and friends celebrating the holiday, may the illuminating Diwali lights surround you and your loved ones with happiness and positivity, and the brightness last all through the year!

 

This following week schools will be closed.  Please use the time to vote, celebrate, and take advantage of the NJEA's Convention for Learning, Equity, and justice.

Good evening Parents,

 

As the school year continues successfully, we want to acknowledge all school staff for their tireless work during the ongoing pandemic and emphasize the joy of students returning to school in person, the targeted interventions in class, the steps to address the social and emotional needs.  Your children are fortunate for the collaborative efforts of the educators you know and the many non-instructional and valuable members of the Jersey City Public Schools who work behind the scene. 

 

For many complex reasons, our country is experiencing shortages of goods and services.  The Jersey City Public Schools has not been immune to the scarcity, and we continue to look for personnel to fill vacancies and receive the orders of products coming from overseas.  Next Saturday, October 30, we will host two job fairs.  At Ferris High School, we will share information about the possible positions as custodial workers, plumbers, security guards, food service workers, bus drivers, bus aides, and clerical.  If you are interested, please visit Ferris High School next Saturday.

 

At Middle School 7, we will hold in-person and virtual interviews for instructional staff, and interested individuals must visit the district website to register for the instructional interviews only.  

 

Schools will be closed the first week of November, as noted in the 2021-2022 school calendar.   Schools are preparing after-school programs to accelerate learning in mastering the weak areas identified in the Start Strong assessment and enrichment activities in STEM and the arts.   The extended day programs will begin as soon as the educators solidify the plans.

Hello Parents,

 

Your children continue to benefit from spending time with their teachers learning acquiring new knowledge and skills. When students were working remotely, you realized how complex the learning process is for young learners. It takes time and repetition to master new content and skills. Athletes know this and use it to improve their abilities, so we ask that you support your children daily by reviewing new content and reinforcing that learning takes time and effort over time. 

 

Most of our employees are fully vaccinated, and as soon as the New Jersey Health Department assigns the District, a provider, all unvaccinated workers will need weekly Covid-19 testing. The people who need weekly tests know and have no problem following the Executive Order. 

 

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, The Jersey City Public Schools participated in National SAT Day. The District administered the PSAT 8/9 assessment to students in grades 8 and 9. Students in grades ten and eleven took the PSAT/NMSQT, and high school seniors took the SAT.

 

This is the last week of our District participating in the Start Strong Assessments mandated by the NJDOE. The District looks forward to the data that our schools will use to address the needs of our students. Thank you, and let's all get vaccinated as soon as possible. It is crucial for our health and the health of our loved ones.

This is Superintendent Franklin Walker. Tomorrow, Monday, October the 11th schools are closed in observance of Columbus Day, a federal holiday. The students are having a wonderful experience as they continue to enjoy their classes and safe normality. They are very cooperative about wearing their masks and getting screened daily. All staff have done a great job embracing the challenge and collaborating. Students in grades four through 10 will continue taking state-mandated start strong assessments. The information from the assessments will help teachers target instruction.

 

This morning you received an email with more information about the StraxAR application, the innovative format will allow our families and the community to access messages conveniently and without the need for contact information such as telephone numbers or email addresses. To use this innovative technology, individuals will need to download the StraxAR application with their smartphones. Once an individual has downloaded the app, they can scan the Jersey City public school district logo from any location using their smartphone to access the most current message. If we do not have your email address, we will share the letter on the district website and social media.

 

We want to thank our students, educators, and support staff for following the safety protocols to keep everyone safe. Students have attended classes for a month now, and everyone is learning new routines and practices to continue in-person learning and keep safe. Your children are outstanding, and they reinforce the importance of education. In October, we also celebrate principals. I want to thank the Jersey City Public School Principals for the outstanding job they continue to do each day, particularly over the past two very challenging years.

 

On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, schools are closed for students as the staff attends classes and workshops to continue our professional growth and serve our students better. 

 

Last week Children in grades 4 through 10 completed state-mandated Start Strong Assessments. As per the NJ Department of Education, the Start Strong Assessment evaluates the needs of students in a concise manner and quickly provides critical data to teachers and school leaders.  On Friday afternoon, seven thousand six hundred eighty-four students completed 14,960 tests between Language Arts, Math, and Science. These assessments will help us address students' unique needs at the beginning of the school year. The district website has a letter I wrote with additional information about the assessment and registering for the parent portal. 

 

I want to thank our students, educators, and support staff for following the safety protocols to keep everyone safe. I hope you and your family are enjoying the great weather that autumn brings. Currently, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.

 

This week our high school parents will meet their children's teachers during the virtual open house. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about academic expectations, school routines, opportunities to take courses at the community college, and the graduation requirements. 

 

Children in grades 4 through 10 will be taking state-mandated Start Strong Assessments. The district website has a letter I wrote with additional information about the assessment and how you can register for the parent portal. Dear Parents,

 

Last week our students completed the first week of in-person learning since the beginning of the pandemic. These are uncertain times, but students benefit tremendously from school. The smiles and active participation in classes speak to how easily students have adjusted. 

 

This week elementary and middle school parents will meet their children's teachers during the virtual open house and learn more about what the children will be learning this year. High school parents will participate in Open House the following week.

 

The district is experiencing issues with school busses. There is a staff shortage across the state, and on any day, the lack of employees is forcing companies to cancel routes. When this happens, our drivers need to make additional runs causing lengthy delays. We are working with the bus companies and our district staff to lessen our dependency on vendors. We are also developing strategies to increase the number of runs our drivers can make on a single day.

Last year we used to send everyone notice when children and staff tested positive for the Covid-19 virus. Our medical department communicates daily with the Jersey City Health Department. They recommended that we send the information to the specific class of the individual that tested positive. In every case, the nurses conduct contact tracing following the latest guidelines from the NJ Department of Health. Suppose a student has to isolate because they were identified as a close contact. In that case, they will be marked present and participate in remote instruction during the isolation. The district communicates daily with the Health Department, and we made them aware of every single case since last year.

Good evening parents,

 

Yesterday, we celebrated Patriot Day to remember the horror and bravery shown on September 11, twenty years ago, just as we remember how we came together, united in grief and purpose. Our students engaged in age-appropriate activities so that we never forget.

 

We are all excited and look forward to an exceptional 2021-2022 school year in a way that remote instruction cannot provide. I want to acknowledge all our staff in maintenance, custodial, trades, and the business office for their diligence for their commitment to our students, and working additional hours. Their attentiveness to repair the damages caused by Storm Ida after our buildings were ready for a safe return.

 

On the first day of classes, the rain made the process chaotic as all 30,000 students returned to school after 18 months of remote learning. Friday was much better across the district, and by the following week, schools will have established the new routines. Transportation was a challenge as we had to increase the number of buses to reduce the number of students in each. We will review the process and look for ways to improve. However, keep in mind as our city repairs streets and improves infrastructure, it impacts traffic flow.

 

Open House will be virtual to limit the number of people in each of our schools. The safety of our students and staff is a priority. The schools will communicate the specific schedules to parents across all the schools. Please visit the district website for the most recent updates.

 

Vaccination is currently the leading public health prevention strategy to end the Covid-19 pandemic. I urge you to get vaccinated and to vaccinate your children 12 years and older. Greetings Parents,

 

Thursday, September 9, 2021, will be our first day of classes. We are looking forward to welcoming your children for in-person learning.  I want to take this opportunity to thank our maintenance and custodial staff for the fantastic job they have done during the last 6 days. The task of cleaning up was monumental after Storm Ida severely impacted our area and flooded the basement in many of our schools.   All our schools are ready to open.

 

Today, our excellent teachers returned from much-needed summer vacation.  They are diligently setting up their classrooms and creating exciting lessons.  As students learn the new normal for schools, please keep in mind that we will implement a layered approach to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.  The layered approach includes everyone wearing a mask, maintaining 3 feet of distance, keeping groups of students together in the classroom, the cafeteria, and the playground.   Young unvaccinated students will eat and play with their classmates.  

 

The district will have random testing for unvaccinated students within the schools starting next week.  You will receive a link to give us consent to test your child for the Covid virus. Our health professionals will collect vaccination records for students and staff.  Unvaccinated employees will need to submit to weekly Covid testing under Executive Order 253.  Employees will receive direct information explaining the procedure and timelines.  Parents can be assured that every employee is either vaccinated or will be tested weekly.

 

Please make sure your child comes with a mask.  We will provide a face mask if they do not have it to comply with the law.  If your child is not feeling well or has any Covid 19 symptoms, please keep them home and call their doctor and the school nurse.  Ensure the school has your most up-to-date contact information if the teacher needs to get in touch with you.  Your telephone number is significant for younger children who may not have memorized your telephone number.

This is Franklin Walker Superintendent. Tomorrow, we celebrate Labor Day and we pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and the beginning of the school year in our area. On Tuesday, all of our instructional personnel return after a well-earned summer vacation. They will attend workshops, prepare classrooms and reach out to their students on September the 8th to meet virtually. We are excited to welcome our students. As much as we all wanted to move forward from the last year of dealing with COVID-19, we are still challenged by the virus’ impact on our country.

As I am sure you have heard, the governor announced on August 6th that a mask would be mandatory for students, staff and visitors while inside our school buildings. Schools have systems in place to ensure a safe learning environment for our students and staff as they work very hard to provide an exceptional education for each student daily. Please make sure your child comes to school with a mask. We will provide a face mask if they do not have one in order to comply with the law. If your child is not feeling well or has any COVID-19 symptoms, please keep them home and call their doctor and the school nurse. A decision on that will not be made until Tuesday as we await the district's progress on storm damage repairs, more information will follow. Good evening Parents,

 

Last night we experienced some challenging weather that left us all with levels of leaks and floods that required immediate action in and around our places of residence.  I sincerely hope everyone is safe and secure.  As far as the schools are concerned, they sustain some significant damage from Storm Ida last evening from basement floodings, partially submerged boilers,  skylights leaking, and roof leaks.   We contacted the office of emergency management for assistance as directed by the County and the Department of Education regulations.  Our staff was extraordinary in their quick responses all over the district to immediately assess the damages and keep many potentially crippling situations to a minimum of repairs.  Thankfully our schools are under level of control, as a matter of fact, and some schools could keep their schedule for Walkthroughs earlier today.  We still remain excited and on schedule to welcome teachers on September 7th and 8th for their professional development and the children on September 9 for the first day of classes.  Good evening; continue to be well and check the website for the latest information on the schools.

Greetings Parents,

 

This week administrators returned from their much-deserved vacation and are participating in professional development opportunities to learn about the new academic and social-emotional programs, regulations, and expectations.  Principals will also create specific schedules and routines for the safe return of students and staff at each school.  Then, they will share the information with you and invite parents for a scheduled tour of the school before students report to school.  Every visitor must wear a mask and follow the safety protocols the schools have established.

 

High school students will enjoy the Jumpstart Program this week to learn about their new school and build bonds with their new school community. The schools have been reaching out to families with specific information. 

 

On August 23, 2021, Governor Murphy announced that all district

staff must be vaccinated by October 18, 2021, or submit to a minimum of 1 test per week.   The Human Resources Department will provide more

instructions and information to staff next week. However, I will continue to encourage staff members and parents to get vaccinated.  It is a matter of public health and well being of our family and friends.

 

The new school year for students begins on Thursday, September 9, 2021, for students with a full day of in-person learning.  Teachers return to work on Tuesday, September 7.  The schools will let parents and students know when students can participate in a short orientation session with one of their teachers. 

 

We are all very excited for the new school year to start and enjoy the company of our students in a safe manner.

You may have heard that Governor Murphy may announce additional recommendations. After he makes an announcement, the New Jersey Department of Education will guide the schools. 

 

The first day of classes for students is Thursday, September 9, 2021. Students will be in school for the entire day. My message on the District website provides details about uniforms, busing, CASPER, screening for students and staff, and lunch.

We welcome the start of the 2021-2022 school year! Please allow the information below, while continually evolving, to provide guidance and support regarding how our schools are prepared to operate as the start of the school year approaches. The information in this letter is according to Governor Murphy’s Executive Order #251 (reinstituting the mask mandate).

 

The chart contents below rely on guidance from the New Jersey Department of Health and the Jersey City Department of Health.   As such, all topics included on this page are subject to revisions based on State and/or local health COVID19 Activity Level Index (CALI) and executive order(s). 

 

Should you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s building principal. As we move closer to starting a new school year, the JCPS District plans to return to a full day of in-person instruction for 2021-2022 as mandated by Governor Murphy on June 28, 2021, updating Executive Order 175. Please review the guidelines in the Road Forward document posted on the NJDOE website.

• The schools will host a virtual orientation for all students with their child’s teacher, and parents will have an opportunity to walk through their child’s school with the building administration. Dates and times will be forthcoming.
• Preschool parents will be permitted to accompany children to their classrooms on the first day of school to drop off, see the room and meet the staff in person.
• Remote instruction would only be available to students during quarantine or closure and not as a long-term option for learning.

 

As described in the NJDOE August 11, 2021 Memo, virtual instruction will be provided under certain conditions when exclusion is directly related to COVID-19 infection and exposure. Elective travel does not fall under this provision. Please keep this in mind when you consider traveling outside of NJ, NY, CT, PA, DE, or international travel, as it will require a quarantine period for your child/children. 

 

The JCPS District’s goal is to provide high-quality instruction and support for our students and their families as we return to full-day in-person learning. We will keep you informed as we navigate the Covid-19 related health concerns and the Governor’s mandates for educating our students. I want to share that the Sparks Summer Camp and the High School Summer Program were highly successful with few incidents of illness thanks to the diligence of the students and staff following the safety protocols. This past Friday, I had scheduled Town Hall Meeting to share with parents the procedures and practices for this coming school year. Unfortunately, the District had to end the Town Hall Meeting because guests could not listen and wait for their turn to speak. We scheduled the meeting as an open dialogue between parents and administrators, and we could not change the settings while it was taking place. We will schedule a Webinar to present the information to the many individuals who wanted to hear. I want to thank the many respectful individuals that watched and pleaded with the unruly guests. We will adjust the presentation we had ready on Friday to show much of the information we planned to say this week and post it to the website.

I sincerely hope that you all are having the opportunity to engage in the enjoyment of some summer fun. It appears that the summer is moving at a rapid pace, and we will be in mid-August very soon. All administrators, supervisors, and additional support staff will be returning for the 2021-2022 school year on August the 23rd. As the district continues to massage the plans for this safe return, we will continue to follow the CDC recommendations with wearing masks, mandating or not mandating vaccines, social distancing, and all other practices that will help us mitigate the spread of the COVID virus. Just like there appears to be a spike in the virus variants, there is also a spike in the anxieties parents have with children returning to being in person. Last year, there wasn't a blueprint of past experiences; as a staff, we understand your concerns and have learned some things from last year. We will do everything that we can to protect your children while at school. We ask that you make every effort to get yourself and your children 12 years old and above vaccinated. The city's health department has partnered with the school district to offer vaccines for students and adults at the following locations: Dickinson High School, Ferris High School, Lincoln High School, and Academy one next to Snyder High School. There is currently a contest going on to see which high school can get the most students vaccinated. Summer jam tickets and other incentives are being offered. The district's senior leadership team will be holding a virtual town hall meeting to provide parents and the community with information about our safe return plan. The first one will be on August the 13th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and the second one on August 31st from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

The New Jersey Department of Education has not provided new guidance. Still, the information they issued in June called for the use of face masks. However, the Jersey City Public Schools Safe Return Plan calls for students and staff to wear a mask and many other practices to mitigate the spread of all the variants of the COVID virus recommended thus far by the CDC.

Vaccines remain effective against the worst outcomes of Covid-19, including from the highly contagious Delta variant. It is a safe way to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy. Greetings Parents,

 

Our SPARKS Summer Camp for elementary children will end this week, and the students and staff have enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect. The credit recovery program for students in 8th to 12th grade continues through August 6th.  

 

The District staff continues the work of maintaining and repairing schools. We have forty-five buildings that need constant attention. We are also researching ways to upgrade many of our infrastructures economically. Each upgrade is a multimillion-dollar investment. A significant upgrade was the addition of filters to classrooms in older buildings with limited ventilation.  

 

The current Safe Return Plan calls for students and staff to wear masks, daily temperature screening, daily communication with the Health Department, enhanced cleaning, isolation of students with symptoms, and quarantine recommended by the health professionals. 

 

During the second and the last week of August, the District Senior Leadership will hold a Townhall meeting for parents to learn more about the routines and expectations for September. I hope you are enjoying the hot weather knowing winter will make us wish it was July. The Teachers on Call Program continues to be available through August 5. Take the opportunity to ask questions of the teachers at your child's school about the summer assignments and seek recommendations.

 

The Summer Programs are in full force now, and the students have adjusted very well. It never fails to amaze us how children adapt to new routines quickly. The summer programs are implementing the  

COVID-19 prevention strategies to safely remain open and maximize in-person instruction by wearing masks correctly, maintaining physical distance, following the handwashing and respiratory guidelines, and daily temperature checks. Thank you for keeping your child home if they show any commonly known symptoms of the COVID virus.  

 

Across the Country, Coronavirus cases are again overloading hospitals in areas with low vaccination rates. Please get your COVID-19 vaccine, find a location and make an appointment to protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangerous effects of COVID-19. Vaccines are safe and effective.

Whether you're celebrating beachside or at a barbecue this 4th of July, please make sure you take time to remember and discuss the importance of the holiday with your children since freedom is not always granted but earned by each generation. In the words of Harry Truman, "America was built on courage, on imagination, and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand." Tomorrow Monday, July 5, all district facilities are closed in observance of Independence Day.

 

The credit recovery summer program for children from 8th to 12th grade began last Thursday, July 1. The elementary SPARKS Summer Camp starts on Tuesday, July 6. Would you mind making sure your child participates regularly? If you have other plans and your child is not experiencing a summer program, make sure to take advantage of the activities your child's teacher sent based on their specific needs and grade level. We have teachers on call to help with any questions. 

 

Meals will be available at the 20 food serving sites posted on the website from 10 am to 12 pm. Starting July 6, meals will be open daily from 10 am to 12 pm at the 20 meal serving sites for all Jersey City residents 18 years old and younger.  

 

Thank you for all your feedback, as we always learn from it. During the summer, my staff and I will be sharing our preparation for a whole day of in-person learning in September. I will also be posting informational videos of the different products and the new normal after the Pandemic.  

 

The first informational video will explain the Aero Max Filters we are installing to improve the air exchange in older school buildings without an HVAC system. I will also discuss the acceleration of learning, social-emotional support, tutoring, parent resource pages, and alumni support, to name a few.

This Tuesday, June 29, 2021, is the last day of class. The Pandemic caused so many uncertainties, changes, and adjustments in mid-course. Yet, we resumed in-person learning in April, and this week, we celebrated graduations and moving ceremonies together. 

 

I also want to thank all the District employees for all the support that made the school year successful and the families for working with us through the process and the new normals.

Please keep in mind that Governor Murphy mandated that schools open to total capacity without remote learning in September.

Additionally, the NJ Department of Human Services will be distributing Pandemic EBT cards again. They will mail the cards to the family of every child that qualifies for free and reduced lunch. It is unbelievable that we are halfway through June, and a school year that started like no other is coming to a close so successfully when we consider the numerous and ever-changing obstacles.  Our focus has been on doing what is best for children and to educate for greatness, and it makes every effort worthwhile. 

 

This week the Safe Return Plan for September will be posted on the District's Website, and you will receive an email with the link.    The Plan calls for students to attend classes for the whole day, eat meals in school, and have the opportunity to participate in CASPER, Morning Stars, and after-school programs.

 

Beginning Tuesday, every family needs to update and confirm their address and contact information. The schools must have accurate addresses and telephone numbers to reach you. Additionally, the NJ Department of Human Services will be distributing Pandemic EBT cards again.  They will mail the cards to the family of every child that qualifies for free and reduced lunch. To ensure the card is delivered to the correct address, parents and guardians need to verify their address on the district's website under Parent Resources.  On Tuesday, we will make the link available on Facebook and as a pop-up on the website.

 

This week students from third grade to high school continue to take their final exams.  The J.C.P.S. will have different summer programs and activities for all grade levels and specific needs.  There will be PK activities to complete at home, the S.P.A.R.K.S Camp to reacclimate students to in-person learning. We will have the A.I.M.S. and H.A.T.S. programs for students with disabilities.  There will be a promotional 8th-grade program for students with failing grades, credit recovery and acceleration for high school students, and grade-level specific activities for students not attending a summer program.

This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day, and schools are closed, Monday, May 31, to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. While Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, I trust you will take a moment to discuss and allow children to understand the significance of Memorial Day as our nation honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The reopening of schools this Spring for in-person learning has gone well, and we have been able to remain open thanks to everyone adhering to the safety protocols. All students and staff will continue to wear a mask following state regulations.

Now we are starting to plan for a safe return in September. Schools will be open for a full day of instruction and will not offer remote instruction, as Governor Murphy announced. We expect all children and staff to return in September, and the children will eat their meals in school. An adjustment we anticipate is schools may need to stagger the entrance in the morning to reduce crowding. Of course, all our plans are subject to change depending on Executive Orders, but we plan for a safe return in September based on the current health trends, and students will remain in school all day. We are preparing for a total return in September following the recommendations of the New Jersey Department of Education and the C.D.C.

Schools are planning graduations and end-of-the-year celebrations and will be sharing the dates and times as we get closer to the end of the school year.

The Jersey City Public Schools "S.P.A.R.K.S. Camp" summer program will provide various hands-on learning activities in Language Arts, Math, S.T.E.M., and the Arts during July. High school students will have the opportunity to participate in Summer School Credit Recovery and Advanced classes to stay on track for graduation. School administrators and the Curriculum Department are working together to create projects that students can complete independently during the summer. Families will receive more information in the next couple of weeks.

Schools have now been open for in-person learning for three weeks, and 20% of our students have returned. We successfully reopened, and in the instances when we have had a positive Covid-19 case, the number of close contacts has been limited, and the schools have been able to remain open. That is a testament to everyone wearing a mask and maintaining social distance. To offer transparency, we have the COVID-19 Dashboard on the website to keep families informed. The Dashboard tracks the number of individuals testing positive who were physically present at a school.  

 

In some schools and at some grade levels, we have small classes. Therefore, the schools will combine the Cohorts to allow students to attend classes every week. By Tuesday, school principals will inform the families if their child will be attending classes every week, with Wednesday as a remote day. Unfortunately, we cannot say everyone due to some more significant levels. Still, we do not want to deny the students in smaller classes the opportunity to attend four days of school in person every week.   

 

The Jersey City Public Schools "S.P.A.R.K.S. Camp" summer program will provide various hands-on learning activities in Language Arts, Math, S.T.E.M.,  and the Arts during July. High school students will have the opportunity to participate in Summer School Credit Recovery and Advanced classes to stay on track for graduation. High School students who take summer courses will have more flexibility in September to take advanced placement courses and electives.  

 

All adults and Children 12 years of age and older are now eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccination. The City has numerous locations that offer vaccination free of charge for residents and individuals that work in the City. Get a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you can because widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help stop the pandemic and return to normalcy. Dear Parents,

 

We are happy to report that schools successfully welcomed the younger students three weeks ago, and this past week we received the first group of high school students. The students, teachers, and administrators were excited to see the children in person. The new normal is getting better each day with students and Staff using the District's Covid-19 Screening App, temperature check at home and school, footwear sanitizing at the entrance, and frequent hand washing. We are all practicing wearing a mask and maintaining social distance to keep each other healthy.

 

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as the district continues to navigate new ways of learning through the end of the 4th marking period with remote and in-person learning. Our teachers work tirelessly to adapt to the challenges and strive to put the needs of their students first. Please continue to make sure your child continues to participate every day in all classes. 

 

As the school year comes to a close, the Jersey City Public Schools is now planning the next steps in moving towards successful in-person learning. As students re-engage with their peers and the school community, the district will offer a new and exciting in-person summer program for elementary and high school students. The Jersey City Public Schools "S.P.A.R.K.S. Camp" will provide an array of hands-on learning activities in Language Arts, Math, S.T.E.M.,  and the Arts during July. High school students will have the opportunity to participate in Summer School Credit Recovery and Advanced classes to stay on track for graduation. High School students who take summer courses will have more flexibility in September to take advanced placement courses, electives, remain with their small learning community, or participate in a Cooperative work experience during their senior year. Dear and Guardians, 

 

Today May 9, we celebrated Mother's Day, and I wish that Mothers and all who mother had a lovely day; because of your love and guidance, our society forges ahead to be a better version. 

 

Tomorrow, May 10, we welcome to our school for the first time the students from fourth grade through high school in Group A for in-person learning. This week all the students in Group A from preschool to 12th grade will be attending classes. The schools will dismiss all students by 12:45 pm. The students learning from home need to sign in and attend classes. We are nearing the end of the year, and participation is crucial.  When students work remotely, they must continue to sign in by 8:30, attend and participate in all classes, and complete all the assignments.

 

This Wednesday, May 12, is National School Nurse Day, and we honor all Jersey City Public School nurses for the care they provide children in school every day.   

 

On Thursday, May 13, schools will be closed for in-person and remote learning in observance of Eid. I hope this year brings peace, prosperity, and happiness to everyone's life. Eid Mubarak!

 

Students are taking meals home, and the District continues to provide meals at the schools and across the City from the busses. The school sites and the busses are providing meals on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The buses will begin at 9:40 am and will end by noon. The shorter schedule will allow the buses to drop off and pick up the hybrid students at the appropriate time. We will still go to all of the stops but spend a shorter time at each stop.  

 

Everyone 16 years of age and older are now eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Get a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you can because widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help stop the pandemic. Please continue to wear a mask.

This past week the first group of students began in-person learning, and it was very successful.  Every school was happy to welcome them back. Tomorrow Monday, May 3, Cohort B of preschool to third-grade students returns to school.  Please remember to check their temperature and if they have a fever or symptoms of illness, keep them home. If the child is healthy, complete the Covid-19 App and bring the child to his or her school.  
Yesterday, Saturday, May 1, 2021, was National Principal Appreciation Day. I want to take this opportunity to publicly commend our principals for the work and professionalism they have demonstrated in the last year for the betterment of the school. It would be nice if students greeted them on Monday with a Happy Principals' Day.  

Then, on Tuesday, May 4, we celebrate National Teachers' Day.  We all have a favorite teacher that has helped and inspired us. Teachers mentor and guide students with their creativity and care to be the best version of themselves.

The District and I are anxiously looking forward to the arrival of your children tomorrow, Thursday, April 29, as the start JCPS in-person reopening. It has been a long 14 months for many of us; however, we graciously and resiliently made it to this point. Students remaining with remote instruction continue to sign into class to maintain good attendance and receive instruction from your teacher. Parents, the first Covid screening starts with you take your child's temperature; complete the Covid-19 questionnaire, and they are on their way to school. The school will continue the screening process. Thank you for your patience and participation in the reopening of schools; we are excited and ready. Keep in mind that all students will be dismissed at 12:45 pm; additionally, wear a mask, maintain social distance and wash hands often. Continue to be safe and have a good evening.

Dear Parents,

 

The District's focus continues to be on doing what is best for children. When The District made the difficult decision to remain closed, that decision was guided by science and the realities of safely staffing a district of 30,000 students for in-person and remote learning simultaneously.   I recently met with Members of the Board and the Teachers' Union Leadership to further discuss reopening schools.  The increased concerns of parents, especially those with young children, have made us reconsider the decision. 

 

Starting Thursday, April 29, 2021, we will welcome the students from PK to third grade who selected in-person learning with a 12:45 dismissal. The schools will group students into groups. The all-remote group, a group A and a group B. During their in-person week, students will attend classes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday will continue as a remote day for everyone to enhance our cleaning at the schools. The school will provide parents and guardians with the schedules.  

 

We grouped grades to make the reopening feasible.  The first group returning is PK to third-grade students.  The tentative return date for fourth to eighth grade is May 10, and grades 9-12 may return on May 10.  The District will share more information as we continue the process of making in-person learning available.  Parents continue to have the option to keep their children with remote learning through June.

 

I will send a separate message to the staff explaining their schedules and District expectations.  Our custodial and maintenance staff has worked very hard to get the schools ready.  Thank you, and stay safe.

I hope you had an opportunity to take advantage of the improving weather this weekend to enjoy the outdoors.  This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will have the same schedule since September with synchronous remote instruction. 

 

On Thursday, April 29, we welcome the first group of students for in-person learning.  The students returning to school will be divided into two groups. The students from preschool to third grade in Cohort A will be the first group of students returning to school.   Your children's school will let you know if your child is part of Cohort A or B.  The schools are making every effort for siblings in the same school to attend in-person learning the same week.  Teachers expect that children will participate in synchronous classes the week they are not attending school.  You will find the weekly schedule for Cohort A and B through June on the district's website.  All students will be dismissed at 12:45.  

 

Parents continue to have the choice to keep their children with remote learning until June.   We will be posting information on the district's website to keep you informed about screening, contact tracing, and the number of positive Covid19 cases at each school if any. Let's make our goal to continue being vigilant with the practices of wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer, and staying home if we feel sick or have a fever.  

 

As students walk into the school, they will step on shoe sanitizing mats and pass through a camera-type device that monitors people's body temperature before going to class.   Please make sure the school has a good telephone number to reach you if your child has an elevated temperature.   Schools always need a good number to contact you or a trusted caregiver.  Please send the information to your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Dear and Guardians, 

 

I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the first Spring weekend.  Currently, registration is open for full-day preschool classes for three and four-year-old children.  For Pre-K 3, children must turn three (3)years old on or before October 1, 2021, and for Pre-K 4, they must be four (4) years old on or before October 1, 2021.  Visit the District website at jcboe.org for more details.  Please share this information with neighbors and friends who have young children.  The JCPS Early Childhood Program is nationally recognized as a high-quality program.   Early Childhood Registration ends on March 31. 

Thank you to the parents that completed the  Parent In-person / Remote Learning Survey.  This week we will review the trends to help us plan.  We will look at the percentage of students whose parents want them to remain remote and wish to return for in-person learning.  We will also look at the rate of teachers who will take a leave and those who plan or have submitted for an accommodation to remain working remotely.  Another critical data point is the feedback from the walkthrough the schools have been completing following the CDC recommendations to slow the spread of COVID-19.  As we learn more about the virus, the CDC and the NJ Health Department continue to update their guidance.  Our focus is the universal and correct use of masks, physical distance, cleaning, screening, and contact tracing. Students and staff that feel ill must remain home and seek medical attention. 

This week all the employees in the District became available, and vaccination is well underway.  Any staff member who wishes to be vaccinated should call the number they received through various emails and telephone calls. 

It would help if you continued to supervise that students attend virtual classes every day, and thank you for your assistance.  Students lose interest quickly in school with their friends, and at home, the distractions can be worse.  Teachers are taking attendance.

Tomorrow Monday, March 15, 2021, I will be presenting the District's "Budget of Equity" that provides our students with a sustainable education that meets their immediate needs due to the Pandemic and long-term needs for a world-class education. 

 

The District is planning to make in-person learning available to all students during the Fourth Marking Period. All families can choose to keep their children learning remotely through June 2021. Please visit the district website jcboe.org and complete a quick survey for each of your children before March 19, 2021. A parent may choose to remain with remote learning or for in-person learning based on a hybrid model. The hybrid model is a combination of in-person and remote learning. As of this time, we are planning to dismiss all children at 12:45 during Phase II. Your selection will help us plan. We will open classes provided that the health data continue to improve and the instructional staff is available. 

 

As I speak to parents, I hear that my messages are very general. Yes, you are correct. As the Superintendent of the Jersey City Public Schools, I need to share broad statements that make sense to the parents of 30,000 students from PK-12. I wish I could be more specific. Particular messages about a school come from the administrator at that school, and detailed news about a class comes from your child's teacher.

The District is planning to make in-person learning available to all students during the Fourth Marking Period. All families can choose to keep their children learning remotely through June 2021. Starting tomorrow, Monday, March 8, please go to the district website jcboe.org and complete a quick survey for each of your children. As of Monday, March 1, 2021, the District website will have flyers with information. These flyers contain links to video presentations highlighting the resources, interventions, and diverse texts available and links to evaluate the materials. I encourage all stakeholders to take part in viewing the videos and assess the English Language Arts resources.

Our educators and support staff continue their commitment to "Doing what is best for children." With that goal in mind, we are preparing to make in-person learning available to families that want to send their children to school on a hybrid schedule. Parents continue to have the option to keep their children with remote classes until June. A hybrid schedule has the same small group of students in a class going on the same days for in-person learning. Then, another group of students would go on a different set of days. The Reopening Plan the District submitted to the Department of Education last August explains the different hybrid phases. This Thursday, during the Board Meeting, I will present details of the current steps the District is taking to resume in-person classes this Spring.

The extreme challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic have laid bare the inequities that affect the lives of children and families. While our students and families have demonstrated resiliency during the Pandemic, we know that our students will need social-emotional support to deal with isolation and loss. As educators, we know that the best learning happens in person, but the Pandemic made it impossible. Hence, in the coming, years our students will need acceleration and more learning opportunities such as after-school programs, tutoring, Saturday academies, extended year, and fun!

 

Immunizations can save your child's life. Please make sure your child is up to date with all the vaccines that protect them against horrible diseases.    Currently, a few hundred students from preschool to seventh grade are missing the mandated vaccines. Vaccines have eliminated some diseases that once injured or killed thousands of children, and others are close to extinction– primarily due to safe and effective vaccines. The State Department of Health monitors vaccination, and students that are missing vaccines will not be allowed to attend classes. Please make sure to have your child vaccinated. Jersey City Health Department offers free vaccines to all children. Contact the school nurse or your child's teacher for assistance. 

 

The High School Fair for eighth-graders in Jersey City continues this week, and find a High School Program that meets your interest within the Jersey City Public Schools. Every student who is a resident in Jersey City is eligible to apply to our Small Learning Communities within the Jersey City Public Schools. The District will hold its annual High School Showcase HIP Fair virtually through February 24. You should make every effort to attend. The High School Principals, Supervisors, teachers, and students will talk about their school and answer your questions. There are links on the District's website to pre-register for each school's virtual event through ZOOM. The link will also have information about each school's Small Learning Community and District's programs. If you have any questions, speak to your School Counselor. They are ready to help you and answer as many questions as possible.

I hope you had a lovely Valentine's Day today.  Tomorrow Monday, February 15, 2021, we celebrate Presidents' Day, a federal holiday, and the Jersey City Public Schools are closed for students and staff. Let's join in prayers for our nation's greatest Presidents because it is in harmony that our society flourishes.

 

Immunizations can save your child's life. Please make sure your child is up to date with all the vaccines that protect them against horrible diseases.    Vaccines have eliminated some diseases that once injured or killed thousands of children have, and others are close to extinction– primarily due to safe and effective vaccines. Polio is one example of the tremendous impact that vaccines have had in the United States. Polio was once America's most-feared disease, causing death and paralysis across the country, but today, thanks to vaccination, there are no reports of Polio in the United States.  Students that have not been immunized as per State Regulations will not be allowed to attend virtual classes the following week.  Please make every effort to immunize your child and send proof to the school nurse.

 

We have read and are following the CDC's recommendations for reopening schools and mitigating the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Please keep in mind that schools need staff to open and remain open. We also require all our employees to return to be able to resume in-person instruction. We have a large number of employees with medical concerns that have requested accommodation to remain remote. Vaccination for teachers, staff, and the community as soon as supply allows would eliminate the barrier and lessen fears.

If your preschool child needs a Chromebook or hotspot, please notify his or her teacher. In coordination with the Early Childhood Department, the school will schedule a day and time for pick up. 

 

For our parents of 8th-grade students, the District will hold its annual High School Showcase HIP Fair from February 16th through February 24th. This year the District will have the High School Fair virtually due to the Pandemic.  

 

The HIP Fair will showcase Dickinson High School, Ferris High School, Lincoln High School, Snyder High School, Innovation, and Liberty. Parents will also learn that students can attend the high school of their choice and be part of the Visual Performing Arts, JC Arts, and the Broadcasting Electronic Storytelling-BEST Program, Small Learning Communities, and Career Technical Education programs. The High School Principals, Supervisors, teachers, and students will talk about their school and answer your questions. 

 

There will be a link on the District's website to pre-register for each school's virtual event through ZOOM. The link will also have information about each school's Small Learning Community and District's programs.

 

During the coming week, your eighth-grader will see a video at the school that highlights all of the participating schools this week. The video will also be available for your review on the District's website before the HIP FAIR Showcase Event.

 

For parents of high school seniors, the NJ State Legislature adopted A4142, which establishes a three-year Bridge Year Pilot Program for individual students whom the COVID-19 Pandemic impacted. The JCPS will offer the Bridge-Year Program to students graduating with the class of 2021 who want the opportunity for a bridge following their senior year of high school. The high schools will share more information with you in the coming days.

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

 

I hope you are enjoying this lazy Sunday afternoon watching the snowfall. The weather forecast calls for a northeastern storm that will affect the entire tristate area.  Therefore, I am announcing a snow day for tomorrow, Monday, February 1, 2021, canceling all activities.  Students and teachers will not have classes tomorrow. All custodial, maintenance and security staff will follow their schedule for snow days.  The district will distribute meals this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday because of the snow.

 

On Wednesday, February 3, 2021, all students begin the third marking period. Students have half-day of classes, and the staff has professional development from 1:30 to 3:45 in the afternoon as we all continue to learn new ways to make learning better for students.

 

Please continue to encourage your child to work hard.  The secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a unique blend of passion and persistence.   It is not a secret when we work hard; we encounter more success.  Make sure your child reads for pleasure.  For younger children, we ask that you read aloud to them about their favorite topics.  It will improve their comprehension as they develop their reading skills.  These simple suggestions can make a huge difference.   If a preschool child needs a Chromebook, please let your child’s teacher know so that we can arrange for a device.

 

We opened our school lots for Jersey City residents again in December, and you will be able to continue using them until the Spring. We will give you more information later in the winter.   I hope this makes it easier as snow falls in the area and makes parking more difficult.  A few schoolyards are not available because of repairs or improvements to the school.

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

 

I want to share my weekly message of January 25, 2021. The last ten months have been a period of new challenges and difficult choices, testing our collective strength and endurance as we have faced the unknown together.  Unexpectedly, we had to reinvent public education building blocks in New Jersey's second-largest school system.  We reinvented how students "go to class" to grading policy, attendance, and everything in between. 

 

Jersey City Public Schools is an urban district with old buildings and crowded classrooms that make getting schools ready extremely difficult and costly. On Thursday, during the Board Meeting, my team will share all that we have done to get schools ready. 

 

Fortunately, the COVID-19 virus does not severely affect children, but children can not return to school without their teachers and the staff to keep them safe.  As soon as the vaccines are available in Jersey City, we will make them available to our employees in collaboration with the JC Health Department.  NJ health commissioner Judy Persichilli said that once the vaccine supply increases, we will be able to dole out as many as 3,000 to 5,000 vaccine doses a day.

 

Our goal is to bring students for in-person learning during the fourth marking period if Public-health statistics for the State continue to trend in a favorable direction. Our students reside in Jersey City, but our staff lives across many counties, so we need to monitor health data across the State.  The Pandemic is ever-evolving, and we had to make many adjustments during the last ten months. 

 

Parents, I want to acknowledge your continued commitment to keeping your children and the district staff safe as we navigate this unprecedented Pandemic.  You became more involved in your child's learning last March, and your dedication is making a difference for your child.  Our staff and I look forward to the day we see and hear your children inside our schools.  There is nothing more fulfilling to an educator than to witness the magic that takes place every day in school.

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

 

Tomorrow Monday, January 18, 2021, is a federal holiday, and we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Students do not have classes. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is a good day to reminisce about the words of wisdom from the giant of the civil rights movement whose nonviolent resistance to the injustices, racial segregation, employment discrimination, and the denial of the right to vote — enlightened our Nation and the world. In the face of tumult and upheaval, Dr. King reminded us to always meet anger with compassion. As we honor Dr. King, let us remember  his famous words, "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."

 

This week students will be participating in reading, writing, or art lessons for "No Name-Calling Week," which is rooted in the idea of Kindness In Action - not merely recognizing the importance of kindness but actively adding a loving heart into our everyday actions.

 

Students must actively engage in their virtual classes every day. As students participate in classes and complete their assignments, they move closer to mastering the grade level requisites and standards. Please remember that the teachers are taking attendance, and every day, students miss a class it delays their learning.

 

We continue to serve meals at 20 different schools throughout the city three days a week, except on holidays. In addition to the 20 schools, we run the Meals on the Bus program serving meals along eight different busy streets. 

 

On Wednesday, President-Elect Biden will be sworn as the 46th President of the United States after tumultuous at the Capital. When speaking to your children about these events, please help them process the information using their head, heart, and, most importantly, their ethical conscience. 

 

Please continue to be cautious, avoid gatherings, and wear a mask as the spread of the COVID-19 virus threatens our health.  Every day, senior staff and I engage in discussions to determine when and how we can return students to the school buildings.  I know there is a tremendous concern for when schools will re-open for in-person instruction.  Since September, every decision that causes us to delay the reopening is made with you and your children in mind and give you adequate time to plan.   The decision for April 21st is to do the same with additional consideration given to the current health risk.  With the vaccine availability and rollout, we hope to return to in-person learning real soon as a district.

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

 

This week of January 11, 2021, I will post a letter with more details about the Reopening Plans.  Unfortunately, the number of individuals infected does has not decreased, and scientists predict an even higher number of cases due to the holidays.  So due to the high COVID-19 transmission rate, students enrolled in the Jersey City Public Schools will remain in "Phase I" explained in the Reopening Plan with remote learning through April 21, 2021. The District will release new information within the next week.   I will send the employees directly the date the District expects them to return to work in person. As the Board and I described earlier this school year, the staff working remotely will report to work in person before the students.

 

Fortunately, Governor Murphy prioritizes teachers for the COVID-19 vaccine making it safer for them to reunite with their students.  The Governor also promised that New Jerseyans would not have to pay for the vaccine itself, regardless of whether they have health insurance coverage.  That's a promising sign amid so much uncertainty and national turmoil.

 

We continue to serve meals at 20 different schools throughout the city three days a week, except on holidays. In addition to the 20 schools, we run the Meals on the Bus program serving meals along 8 different busy streets and most neighborhoods. The Meals on the Bus run on Martin Luther King Blvd., Cole Street, Palisades Avenue, Kennedy Blvd., West Side Avenue, Garfield Avenue, and Ocean Avenue. Without stating the obvious, 2020 was a challenging year marked by historical events and unforeseen changes to work and home lives. It also forced the District and every one of us as individuals to learn new skills.

 

We will continue with remote learning through the second marking period, and students need to actively engage in their virtual classes each and every day. As students participate in classes and complete their assignments, they move closer to mastering the grade level requisites and standards. The second marking period ends on February 2, 2021. 

 

According to reports, New Jersey's counts of new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to very high. We continue to review information, health data, and recommendations to announce the return to in-person learning. We will work with the Board and the different unions to let you know when we will be moving to Phase 2 with in-person learning. 

 

Governor Murphy announced that indoor sports activities may resume with a 10-person capacity limit on all indoor activities, except players, coaches, and officials. For most sports, that means no spectators. We know you want to support our student-athletes, your children, but safety remains our highest priority. We will not be able to have fans in the games, but we will try to stream as many games as possible. 

 

It's time to be hopeful, have new dreams, and make some new resolutions for the new year. It's time to connect with each other with a phone call, a card, or by Zooming, not in person. As shared on numerous occasions, please follow these guidelines to protect your health and those around you:

 

• Wear a mask;
• Maintain social distance and remain 6 feet apart from co-workers and in public spaces;
• Avoid unnecessary gatherings;
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, coughing, or sneezing;
• If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• If you have a fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, please remain home and only go out to seek medical care. 

 

The new year means a lot of new dreams and achievements for our students. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to the Jersey City Public Schools' children. Greetings Parents and Guardians,

 

I wish you had a safe Thanksgiving.  It certainly was different for everyone away from the extended family and close friends we traditionally enjoy. Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday for most people.  Unfortunately, health data reinforce how important it is for everyone to maintain social distance, avoid gatherings, and wear a mask.

 

The schedules remain the same. However, we will continue to monitor the current schedules to provide needed support to students who may have experienced some challenges adjusting to remote learning during the first marking period. 

 

Today is November 29, 2020, and we are now entering the second marking period.  All students need to continue working hard to learn new skills.  Regrettably, the increase in COVID 19 cases makes it difficult to have in-person learning, and parents need to be involved in daily lessons.  As educators, we know it takes time for students to learn new skills in each of the content areas.  Please have patience with your children but be consistent and maintain the routines you and their teachers have developed.  In-person learning is the best, but to keep everyone safe, we must continue with online learning.  

 

Please take advantage of the meals at 20 different schools throughout the city.  All Jersey City children under the age of 18 are eligible.  Please visit the website at jcboe.org to learn about the schedule and find the school nearest you.   It does not need to be the school your children attend but one closest to your home. 

 

Please continue to support your children with remote learning and follow the health recommendations to stay healthy.

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

 

I hope you and your loved ones continue to enjoy good health during these challenging times. As I told you last Sunday, we have tweaked the student schedules for the second marking period using your responses and recommendations. These minor adjustments to the schedule will allow teachers to personalize support for students. So today, I want to give you a brief overview of the changes. The District's website will have complete information this weekend. 

 

During the second marking, the students' schedules from preschool to eighth grade will include independent learning activities every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. During this independent time, students who need assistance will be scheduled for individual or small group support from 1:30 to 2:10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning December 1st. Teachers will then have time for professional learning, as we all try to master new techniques and technology from 2:15 to 2:55. Again this is the schedule for students from preschool to 8th grade beginning December 1st. 

 

High School students will work independently every Wednesday afternoon. During this independent time, students who need assistance will be scheduled for individual or small group support from 1:30 to 2:10 on Wednesdays beginning December 2nd. Teachers will then have time for professional learning, as we all try to master new techniques and technology from 2:15 to 3:10. Again, this is the schedule that begins on December 2nd.

Greetings parents,

 

Tomorrow Monday, October 12, the district is closed in observance of Columbus Day, a Federal Holiday.  I said that we would begin the revised schedule this week, but we needed more planning time.  We will make students and families aware of the new times this week, and we will begin the week of October 19.  Students will not miss out on any subject but will experience less time in Google Meet or Zoom.

 

We continue to monitor State Health data for Covid-19 and, together with your feedback to your child's principal, will use the information to set a date to begin Phase 2. In Phase 2, a portion of the students will go to school for in-person learning.

 

Please make sure your child signs in every morning.  Students need to participate in synchronous lessons with their teachers, which is how teachers take attendance. Low attendance will negatively impact their academic growth and ability to learn the standards for the grade level.  Since we can't be together in schools, we need to make sure students are present remotely.

 

I hope you enjoy an extra day this weekend and continue to maintain social distance.

Autumn is officially here with colorful leaves and cooler weather. As our students and teachers work remotely, the staff continues to get schools ready for in-person learning. We continue to monitor school readiness and health data to determine the start of phase 2. Phase 2 is a combination of in-person and remote learning for one-third of the students. 

 

Tomorrow, October 5th is the last day to complete the Census. The 2020 Census counts everyone living in the United States regardless. Please make sure it counts you and your family. When everyone participates, the government provides more funds to improve hospitals, schools, and the City. Please complete the form online, by visiting my2020census.gov

 

October is National Principals Month, and I want to take this opportunity to thank our principals for their leadership and search for excellence. Their dedication benefits the students and staff. 

 

On Wednesday, students do not have classes, but teachers will have an opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities. We listened to your recommendations, and the week of October 12th, we will share a revised schedule for students with less screen time. The revised school will include all content areas, including art, music, and physical education. 

 

Your child's school will continue to reach out to learn if you plan to send your child for in-person learning when schools open. We need the information to make our plans.  Thank you, and continue to maintain healthy habits to stay safe.

Dear Parents,

 

Our students and staff now have two weeks of a new school year in a way that has never been done before but may become our future practices.  It doesn't seem like the COVID-19 Pandemic will end soon enough, and we need to think differently about how we do things.  Technology and remote learning will be an essential part of teaching and learning.  We are currently reviewing the schedules to make adjustments that allow our students to receive a great learning experience but allow for some flexibility. Based on your recommendations, we may shorten the school day for students.  Currently, we plan to bring students for in-person instruction using phase 1 of the hybrid model at the end of the first marking period on November 17, 2020.  During phase 1, only one-third of the class would report to school for in-person learning.  Parents may choose to keep their children on remote learning through June 2021, as explained in the JCPS Reopening Plan. 

 

We have talented educators who know how to teach, but we are all learning new skills quickly.  So just as we plan to keep our students mastering new skills, we continue to challenge ourselves.  There will be many opportunities for the staff to participate in professional learning opportunities. 

 

The custodial staff will also have opportunities to learn about new products, procedures, and practices to keep everyone safe.  They are a vital part of keeping everyone safe and healthy. 

 

In the next few weeks, we should receive the student desk shields. These shields are also called sneeze guards. Every student will have protection to prevent the droplets from touching other students.  Yesterday, district staff were physically setting up a few COVID-19 Model classrooms, and we will be able to show you as soon through pictures from a few different schools.  

 

We have reached a historical agreement with NJCU to keep A Harry Moore in their building, providing a vulnerable population with continuity and an updated facility.  

 

The District will distribute the applications for admission to schools like MAHS, Infinity, Liberty, and the Accelerated Programs at MS 4 and Academy I in January. We will schedule the test between February and March.  At that time, students will be able to take the test in-person since they don't have a remote option.

Greetings Parents,

 

Last week we had our first week of classes, and even though it is a brand new experience for everyone, we were able to achieve success to some degree. As educators, we prefer and know that a traditional instruction model is the most effective because learning depends strongly on the social-emotional bonds forged in the classroom. Parents, thank you for y the feedback and suggestions. It is still very early to determine what works and what needs to be tweaked. 

 

Remote learning has forced everyone to operate outside the comfort zone, and for the parents with young children, it means that you need to be part of the process. We can imagine and empathize with the challenges, but you need to know the school district's goal is to make sure your children achieve high academic levels despite the Pandemic. Your children's future depends on mastering the standards to get into great schools and have successful careers. 

 

More than ever, your child needs you. Please make sure your child attends all the online sessions and completes the assignments. As the schools receive the workbooks, they will let you know the schedule to pick up the consumable materials. The younger students need these resources to practice their writing, reading, and mathematical skills. 

 

 If your child needs in grades, K-12 need a device, call the school and schedule a time for pick-up. If you are not able to reach the school, you can call  1-877-708-8195. The most important goal is to give access to families without a computer. Then, we plan to provide a device to every child, which will take in October and November when more Chromebooks come in.  

 

Every year we have an Open House where parents visit the school and meet the teachers and the principals. Well, under the new normal, it will be different. Your child's teacher will send you an email inviting all the parents in the class for an evening meeting using Google Classroom or Zoom. This Tuesday, September 22nd, is the Open House for Elementary Schools. Middle School Open House is Wednesday, September 23rd. Tuesday, September 29th, is the High School Open House. The schools will let you know.

Good evening parents,

 

This week we will continue with virtual learning. We had an excellent start to the school year, and it will continue to improve. During a traditional school year, the first few days of classes are full of questions and uncertainties as parents get to know their children's class expectations and as teachers get to know their students. This year the difference is that parents get to see the process and, at times, expect perfection. It takes time to build routines and set achievable expectations. Your children will be able to do all that you wish, but it won't happen overnight. We know it is not easy and would love to be able to have students in the classroom, but that is not possible at this time. 

 

We are all doing things differently during the pandemic. In the past, we gave students all their books on the first day of class; now, the process will be different. Your child's school will let you know when they will distribute the books for young learners. Older students can use all the materials online, but younger children may need workbooks.

 

Please communicate with your child's school, we have many different classes, and there is no one answer. The response needs to be specific to your child's level. 

 

Teaching and learning are not easy, and doing it through virtual instruction is challenging. However, working together will benefit your child. Good evening parents,

 

I am very excited to begin the 2020-2021 school year. It was an unforgettable summer, but I hope you had time to spend time with your family because many of us have experienced a loss. Despite the Pandemic, the beginning of the school year brings new relationships and endless opportunities. We have high expectations for our students, and everyone will support our student's academic and social-emotional growth. We are Educating for Greatness by developing a vision of doing what is best for all students and making them academically competitive in a global society. The custodial, maintenance, clerical staff, and administrators have been busily preparing to ensure that we meet our students' developmental needs while we provide enrichment, acceleration, resources, and support. Classes resume on September 10th, and we need to be ready. Remote learning will be very different from last Spring when we implemented a home-instruction model. During this upcoming school year, we must provide a full day of instruction during the 180 days of classes.  We also know that excellent teaching requires face-to-face interactions and independent activities. While students will be learning the full day, the amount of time they spend in front of the screen will be developmentally appropriate based on their age and development. The school day will include core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. It will also include activities to promote social-emotional well-being, physical activities, music, the arts, and time for lunch. During August, many teachers participated in professional development. We are also working with the Administrators who returned to school last week to share our expectations, develop plans, and create specific school schedules. 

 

This school year, our practices will be different to ensure our students, staff, and community safety. We will need to limit or schedule visitors to the school, but our administrators are working in the school so you can call with questions and concerns. The principals will be sending all the parents messages for each particular school to avoid confusion, including the specific schedule for your child based on their grade. At the district level, we will be sharing samples to help parents organize their day. The examples will show the typical day of a teacher to help you understand our goal. If your child needs a device, please contact your child’s principal or call the office.  Even though the doors are not open for visitors the staff will be able to answer your question or call you back with the information.   Please continue to take precautions to stay safe.
