Several school districts across the Rio Grande Valley are now offering virtual learning.

The opportunity opened up through a new law signed by the governor late last week.

But virtual learning won’t be available for everyone.

Those eligible will only be for 10% of total students per school district and have been showing up to class. Students must also have a C average or high in their core classes.

San Benito CISD has begun offering remote learning. District Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman said parents were waiting for a virtual option to be available.

McAllen ISD will be reviewing applications to see who meets the criteria. Passing the STAAR assessment is another requirement for those who have taken it.

Dr. Carman said the district will be monitoring the pandemic before considering if the program will still run after the winter break. This year’s virtual learning will be different from last year as those who choose to enroll will have a separate teacher than those who attend face to face.

Applications for San Benito CISD and McAllen ISD are currently open and will go on until Sept. 24. Brownsville ISD just announced they'll begin accepting applications for their program on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Other school districts such as Mission CISD and La Joya ISD have also announced they are offering the remote learning option.
