The sound of students on campus...
Dear Oakland Unified Community,

On Tuesday, we entered a new phase of reopening our campuses and look forward to welcoming even more students back on April 19. I wanted to share some appreciations, a quick note on our planning for the fall, and some upcoming community engagements.

Hybrid learning is off to a great start
On Tuesday, I visited Madison Park Academy (MPA) Primary, Brookfield Elementary, and Glenview Elementary schools. The sound of students on our campuses brings me so much joy.

I continue to be so proud of and humbled by our staff and families. Everyone is stepping up and putting students first. It is incredibly inspiring. It has taken an enormous amount of work for our staff to welcome students back to school.

It is inspiring to see the remarkable and creative ways that our educators are showing our kids how much they are cared for. These examples are from just a few of our schools, but I know they are indicative of the commitment and care exemplified by our staff across the district.

Planning for the fall
We are planning for all of our schools to open fully in-person to all students for the fall 21-22 semester.  That is as close as I - or anybody -  can come to providing assurances. I wish I could say our schools WILL open fully in the fall, but that is not rooted in the reality of our situation.

A full school opening is what I want to see, and what I believe we will be able to do in the fall. However, since we are still in a pandemic and conditions could change for the worse for some seen or unforeseen reasons, we will also plan for a hybrid learning model, just in case.

Likewise, we are still looking at the possibility of offering a distance learning option for families who want to keep their children at home.

Upcoming Community Engagements
  • Youth session on COVID Safety and Vaccines:  On April 13 from 3:30-5:00 p.m., we will host a Youth session on COVID Safety and Vaccines (more details to come)
  • Fall Secondary Planning Family Engagement Session: On April 15 starting at 5:30 p.m, join us for a family engagement about secondary planning and schedules for this fall. Look for more information, including a Zoom link in the next week or so.
Next week, all school sites will be closed for spring break. I wish you and your loved ones some much deserved peace and rest.

In community,

Kyla Johnson-Trammell
